Did a weekend tour with Kevin and team. Stayed one night at the penguin cottage and did the day walk and night penguin tours. All of them were very unique experiences. Managed to live above a small penguin family in the cottage which was awesome. The day tour was very informative with many good photo spots - Kevin's wife, our guide, was very chatty and knowledgeable. The night penguin tour was very unique as we managed to catch a few penguins in their nature state - our guide Kelvin, was very patient in guiding and explaining throughout. Would recommend this to anyone looking to view penguins in their most natural state!
We did the half-day safari led by Ben and it was such a wonderful experience. Beautiful scenic drive through the mountains, enjoyed the photo stop near the lighthouse. Then we went to the farm and got to see two penguin chicks getting fed and having some swimming physio, followed by a tour of the nesting boxes where we were allowed to peek in at a few resting penguins. The staff are so knowledgable and genuinely care about and respect the wildlife. It was such a privilege to see the penguins up close. Thank you!!!
What an amazing experience, so worth the money! We did the 24hr package including a stay over on their farm in the lovely Gypsy Caravan. We got picked up from Akaroa and driven over, our guide Kevin was awesome, great guy with loads of stories and facts. We did an optional native bush walk mostly downhill past 3 waterfalls! which was great. We joined the evening penguin tour and we given camouflage coats and binoculars to help us spot the penguins on the sea. Along the way we saw many penguins in their little houses. We saw so many penguins and felt great that our money goes to help these precious birds. Next day we did Sea Kayaking and again our guide was amazing, super knowledgeable and passionate about the local wildlife, we felt so safe out there with her and learnt so much. We are still buzzing about our experience and cannot wait to go back again someday. Super highly recommended!
We had such a great time! Ben was an incredible guide and so knowledgeable about wildlife, we learned and saw a lot he’s also super knowledgeable about birds which was a plus. The kayaking alone is beautiful and fun. It’s also a great way to support the wildlife efforts in the area it helps the penguins! Highly recommend!
We found this sea kayaking + 4WD tour on Get Your Guide website and definitely a 11/10 experience! For only $110 per person morning slot, we got a ride on their 4WD that brings us to Flea Bay which has outstanding scenic views. The sea kayaking experience was phenomenal. We saw many sea fur babies like seals and penguins! Ben, our tour guide was extremely friendly, accommodating, informative and overall an amazing tour guide. Also the money will be going towards the conservative project that they are conducting at the moment to protect the wild life like the penguins. Definitely for a good cause these amazing people are doing and a must do at Akaroa!
Really great conservation work being done for the penguins. Our guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the little penguins. Along the way, she stopped at scenic spots and gave us information about the area. The evening tour was very worth it. Only advice is that the path to the hides is a bit uneven and rocky, so wear sturdy shoes.
Absolutely unreal experience provided by Kevin. Took a ride up to the top and got some amazing views of akaroa harbour. Followed by descending to fleas bay to feed some lambs as luckily it was lambing season. And finally we saw some little blue penguins in their huts and in the wild as the sun descended on the harbour. Got to see some seals too for an added experience. Kevin was super knowledgeable about the penguins and the various threats facing the species. So nice to see that our tickets help pay for the conservation effort. Would highly recommend this to anyone visiting beautiful little akaroa !
A hidden gem in New Zealand that has to be experienced! It was over cast and raining on our Sea Kayak tour but that didn’t dampen the beauty! Lots of seals, little blue penguins and even saw hectors dolphins in the harbour. Our guide Viola was so informative and passionate it made it an incredible experience. The people here do such important conservation work, they deserve your support and you won’t regret adding this to your trip. I will be back to do the banks track through native bush and stay in one of the farm accommodations. Also we are not fit and found the Kayaking very manageable as we went at our own pace and felt very safe the whole time. Photos do not do this place justice, you need to see it. 10/10 recommended!!
This was a great tour where we could see seals and blue penguins in the same day. Kevin and Ben did a great job guiding us through the hill and then during the kayaking. We were lucky the day was sunny and warm. Don’t forget bring water and a camera.
Amazing tour! We saw cute little penguins and chicks. Learned a lot about them and also sheep. Scenic drive with photo stops. Definitely recommend taking a tour, the founds go into helping penguins. Also bought a t-shirt there, awesome quality and I love wearing it!
