About

Welcome to Whangamata pedal & Paddle, the home of outdoor adventure in the Coromandel.

Story

Peddle and Paddle is a local bussiness based in Whangamata, NZ. Owner, Chris Coombe, runs the business all year round with a handful of helpful and friendly staff to provide a reliable, and good quality service to the active locals and holidays makers of the area.

Our team:

Chris- Owner: Chris Coombe, known around Whangamata to be the man that can fix anything and everything, as he has a wide and vast knowledge of all outdoor activities and equipment. With over 20 years of experience in multi-sports and cycling, Chris really knows what's he talking about, so if you have got questions he's the one to ask... but be wary, he's a busy man.

Julie- The Boss: Coming from a corporate background Julie is over looks a large amount of events that run from the store such as ladies weekends and corporate weekends.

Zac- The Mascot: Our resident mascot 95 years old in human years (15 dog years) you'll find him pottering round the store, or causing havoc lying in the middle of the pathway. He maybe an old guy now, but Zac still loves roaming round the beach each morning checking out the babes. The place wouldn't be complete without him.

Bruce- The Looks: Having been in the surfing business for over 20 years, Bruce originally had his own surf brand in Taranaki. An expert on the mechanics and build of surf boards he's the one with the know when it comes to the technicalities of surfing and the water activity.

Noods- The Pom: Every good store needs a Pom to keeps things in order and for 2 summers now we have Noods. Head of I.T and admin, Noods makes sure the everything is running smoothly on the floor.

Karlos- The SUP Expert: Stand Up Paddle Boarding is our newest addition to the store here in Whangamata and so is Karlos. Sponsored by one of our SUP Suppliers (Luke Short Designs), Karlos is the guy if you need lessons, tours, or knowledge when it comes to Stand Up Paddle Boarding, just be wary that if the surf is good Karlos is hard to find.

My parents and I hired a double and single kayak today and we found the whole experience fantastic. We really appreciated the freedom of the unguided tour. We were given clear instructions on how to get to Whenuakura Island, and given a very reasonable time frame in which to do so as well. Dry bags were provided free of charge if you wish to take your phone or camera along with you to take photos. We really appreciated how reasonably priced $100 total for the three of us and straightforward t everything was. Thank you!
Terrible experience. They just tell you if the ocean is too rough don't go inside. But it was fine the first couple of minutes getting there but once inside de cave, huge waves flipped me and 4 more kayak agains the rocks and we all hurt ourselves. They should have canceled because the wind was intense for a couple of hours and the conditions were not acceptable, but instead they blamed us. All hurt, stuck in the small piece of sand we finally reached after trying not to hurt agains the rocks again, terrified and lost our things while trying to reach some signal to call for rescue. Trying to exit the cave again the waves hit us against the rocks. No refund, no caring at all and on top of that rude. Disappointing. Would never recommend this company to anyone. They do not take any responsibility just want your money. I hurt my shoulder, ankle and wrist and two other guys were bleeding. It could of ended much worse and a trauma for sure. This is the last photo we have before everything went worse and screaming and crying began. We landed on the island because we were terrified, hoping not to drown while the waves push us against the rocks, already hurt and desperate for help. But it is clear that you worry more about your business than the customer experience.
I have found over the years that they are pretty hit and miss with the repairs. Cheap prices but I would rather pay more and have it fixed properly the first time. For one repair I returned 3 times and then the "repair" which was actually supposed to be a replacement, broke on an out of town trip so I had to get the part replaced out of town on holiday and we haven't had a problem with it since. Another time I was told my e-bike was simply too heavy for the rear brake to stop it effectively so even though we asked them to fix it, they didn't even look at it, however we discovered that the brake actually had a leak and the brake is now working fine. It's frustrating as some repairs have been really good and good value for money, but I'm really on the fence about them now, especially after the avoidable interruption to our out of town holiday.
Came here a few days ago with three friends to hire Kayaks $30p.p - 2 Hours to explore Donut Island. Although the day was quite busy Booking in advance would be good with only a few bookings available the staff at the shop were really accommodating and put our name down for a session later in the afternoon 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. We got to the beach fairly early, and some of the kayaks from the previous session had already returned, and we were able to set out early, which was great! Overall excellent customer service . The kayaking experience was pretty enjoyable, and I would definitely recommend getting a double kayak over singles for a group of friends. We found we were able to navigate our way to donut island fairly easily as there were many people out on the water. A dry bag was also provided to us for free which was handy fo store shoes, phones, keys etc.
These guys are great - very happy with their customer service. We freedom hired the kayaks and once out at Whenuakura Island we waited for a group to go in before us. This meant we had the interior to ourselves 2 kayaks. Awesome experience- highly recommend Pedal and Paddle!
Great service on a busy day.....booked a double Kayak for the Donut Island tour for 2.00pm. Wonderful experience enjoyed on a perfect day for kayaking by me and my 5 year old grandson.
Awesome experience, awesome service. Went out for a paddle to donut island today with a friend. We had booked the wrong day with another company and Pedal and Paddle fit us in with no problems. The guys were super helpful and fun. Would love to go again. Great stuff!
Excellent bike shop if you are looking for purchasing a bike. They will even let you test them out before purchasing. Thank you very much for the kind lady whom assisted me yesterday. Great person and very kind heart going out of her way to help. I do apologise I didnt come back to purchase as ran out of time but would definitely recommend if you are looking for new bikes, parts and accessories. Thank you very much!
Super helpful. My mate had a mechanical 10 secs into his first mtb ride at Whangamata bike park. Quick trip to Pedal and Paddle during a super busy new year's eve got it fixed and had a great ride.
Best Kayak Rental in town we definitely enjoyed our ride to the island. Highly recommended!
