Amazing walk + short hike! What an experience. You’ll need to wear sturdy shoes as there are plenty of rocks to climb over and the rocks in the water can be slippery. Expect to have your shoes and lower legs/pants to be soaked as you will cross water for most of the chasm. I went on the hike alone but I would recommend going with someone else in case you need help with climbing some taller rocks etc. Plenty of beautiful spots to take pictures. They give you around 3 hours to finish the walk and for someone with low-medium fitness, it is definitely doable. So worth it on a sunny day!
This is just one of the most amazing tracks I’ve been to. You’ll be walking in the river most of the time so best you can wear is sandshoes or a pair or shoes you feel comfortable to walk in the water. Also you’ll finish almost all wet so bring change clothes to drive dry back home. All track is stunning and easy to do but walking in the river can be slippery. There are not toilets on the way and you’ll be walking for 3 hours but there is a toilet in the parking lot. Driving there is easy and just a few km of gravel road in good condition. Highly recommended.
What a privilege to finally do this walk after having previous bookings I had to cancel. It was worth the wait. Just wow. I bought a waterproof pouch for my phone and had my car keys and a warm top in a dribag in my backpack along with a water bottle and small lunch. I had good grip on my walking shoes, but fell in the river about 3x which is all part of the fun. The rocks are slippery. But take it easy, enjoy the surroundings and anyone of average fitness paying attention will be just fine. There were several children when I did it, maybe around 7-8 years old, who were well supervised by their families and they loved it. Get there just a little early to set the scene. There is a 15 minute ride on a trailer towed by a 4wd, at the start and finish. The track is well marked. Be prepared to walk in a river for 3 hours admiring the majestic surroundings. You will use ropes and a ladder to keep to the track, so pay attention and focus your energy when doing this. I'm 67 and it wasn't hard at all. Nice touch at the end as the coffee cart was open that day and our orders were radioed ahead from the end of the track. When our trailer arrived, our coffee and delicious scone was waiting. A very special day out. I recommend this trip very, very highly. Its a NZ must-do
Highly recommend. Great service and facilities. Weather dependent but always plenty of notice of cancellations on social media. Definitely take good grip shoes as the rocks get slippery. Waterproof bag for your camera/keys/wallet is also a must as it can get deep at short notice. Waterfall up stream from the start of the chasm was my favourite spot.
Definitely worth doing if you're ever around Martinborough. Did the chasm walk, and was treated to a fun hike with gorgeous views. Do prepare to get wet, as you will be walking through a river and some sections can get quite deep.
One of the best walks we've ever done. Approx 3km walk, wear shoes that wont slip on rocks. We are a family of 4 and my teenage boys loved this. Pretty challenging at times, with steep climbs and the water can come up to waist height. Watch out for the stinging nettles. Take a set of dry clothes along, but leave it in the car. There is an outdoor toilet and change rooms available, but no shop, so take water, energy bars etc.
The walk was perfect for an outing with a group of colleagues! It's a great adventure and we had a blast!
What an awesome adventure. Very wet, amazing scenery and a great adventure with kids. If you can take your own 4 x 4 and have a picnic when you finish. Should be at the top of your adventure with whanau to do list!
Well worth doing, very easy walk and very scenic. You are walking through the chasm stream bed so wearing water ready footwear is a must, hiking boots are not required and wouldn’t be the best. Wear clothing that can get wet and dry quickly, bring warm clothing for after being in the water. Ideal footwear would be sandshoes, not jandals for an easy walk.
Patuna Chasm walk is STUNNING ! We were blown away by how beautiful it was. The coffee truck at the end was such a treat, awesome set up you guys have going on. Thanks for a great day, go you !
