Pattern making for beginners and advanced: Workshop on Saturday afternoon at the Pt Chev Homestead.

Story

we have two hours workshop during which we cover the basics of pattern making. Every other saturdays, the basic class is followed by an advance class where we approach the basic styling of the skirt, bodice and trouser blocks.

We will do theory during the first 20mn and the rest of the session will be practical drawing to draft your own pattern.
The classes are sequential but I will work with you individually at each session. For a quick progress regular attendance is always best.
When your pattern is finished we will make a toile (a calico sample of your pattern): That page shows the work and progress
Sewing is infused gradually according to the needs.



"NZ Academy of Fashion has been set up so you can learn to sew and draft patterns for garments from the very beginning. Using our Bernina sewing machines you can learn sewing techniques with the assistance of an experienced tutor. Patternmaking from the beginning if you are an experienced sewist. Or if you are unable to come to the Academy we also offer Distance Classes in both subjects. Whether you want to learn to craft garments for yourself or others, we can guide you in the right direction."

Recently completed my first beginners course in garment construction. It was so much fun and definitely learned a lot. When I first got there I had no idea what I was doing, but I learned a lot in such a small time, and at the end I could make my own garment which was such an achievement for me. I had such a great teacher, Sunita really takes time and patience to teach, even if she had to show you 10 times she did it with a smile. I am very grateful to be part of this, and will definitely continue my garment construction journey at NZ Academy of Fashion in 2023.
I have just completed the beginner garment construction course with Sunita. I had never used a sewing machine before and I have gained so many skills during the sessions. Sunita keeps class sizes small and gives so much attention to detail. We were taught multiple techniques to complete all aspects of dressmaking and shown handy tips and tricks along the way. The course requires commitment beyond the face to face sessions each week, but if you do your homework it is very manageable! I would recommend to anyone looking to gain skill and technique or anyone starting out with an interest in the industry.
I had an awesome experience with NZ Fashion Academy. The beginner garment construction course offered me techniques that has set me up for further developing my sewing skills. At the beginning I didn’t even know how a sewing machine worked! The tutor- Sunita, was so attentive to my learning and would guide me when I was struggling and give me encouragement to keep going. It is worth the money and time if you’re interested in fashion design. Thank you again!
I really enjoyed the beginner pattern making course. Sunita is an awesome teacher. I really appreciated the time that she took helping me with fitting, and to learn the course material. I have also gained a much better understanding of sewing construction through this course as I now understand how a sewing pattern is put together and why it's drafted a certain way. I look forward to using what I've learnt to design and make clothes and would love to attend another course in the future
An absolutely FANTASTIC evening course! My friend and I had the time of our lives laughing and joking with Sunita, making a gorgeous skirt. Sunita, the tutor, is knowledgeable, kind, friendly and patient. I learnt ever such a lot about sewing and I can’t wait to show off my new skirt and my new skills. 10/10 highly recommend.
I have completed Beginning patternmaking course from this academy and I love it! I am already skilled as a sewer but I still need to know about pattern making .This course made me more confident to make my own blocks, and I am really appreciate about the training method, tips and techniques which they are giving with friendly environment .The main benefits for me are knowing measurement, I didn't know properly before it, know i got the correct way to measure a body. Sunita was my teacher and she is wonderful, well experienced and best. I would highly recommend this course and ask the academy when they are doing the more advanced patternmaking courses in the weekend so it is more flexible for me to join next. Safia Sana.
I recently completed the Beginners Patternmaking Course here and loved it! Such a well-structured course in a friendly environment and a professional classroom/studio. I had Sunita as a teacher and she was the best, I literally knew nothing about patternmaking before I started this course and I feel like I've learnt so much and now feel comfortable enough to make my own basic patterns and garments at home. Being in a small class was wonderful as we could ask the teacher a lot of questions and you get to know your fellow classmates and learn from each other. Would totally recommend this course and I'm looking forward to taking more classes here in the future!
NZ Academy of Fashion has been teaching my 14 yr old daughter to sew clothing. She is progressing quickly and comes home feeling very accomplished. The school has classes for all ages however. : The teachers have structured the teen class to teach at the girls' level and spend extra one on one time to help them complete difficult techniques. My daughter has already completed an invisible zip perfectly and I am told that is quite difficult. We are all very proud of that. The academy has a beautiful facility in a residential neighborhoods with many professional quality sewing machines, tables and tools. The teachers are highly competent and the right amount of kind strict to ensure quality results from the students. The academy has helped me understand what tools I need to purchase and provided us with high quality tools at our cost when she needed something. My daughters teacher took alot of time to talk to me about materials and training in fact, and how we could give my daughter a lift to do her best. They really do look after the individual student which is amazing. The academy is a friendly and productive environment that will get you to the stage of sewing you would like to be. You'll probably make some nice friends in class as well who share your interests. Happy as can be!
I absolutely enjoyed the pattern making course . Sunita is a fantastic teacher! She explained everything very well and shared some helpful tips regarding the pattern making . Highly recommend.
I would love to go there and learn how to design clothes
