Owaka Freedom Camp has all you need for the night. It's down a side road, practically situayed at the back of Catlins Inn where you can pop over and have a meal and a few handles. There are horses to look at but don't feed. There is also a dump station with Potable water. An all in one stop shop.
I don’t know what people complain about here, but to us it was easy one of the nicest stays for a night. What more can you ask for?? There’s a PDS right next to the parking lot as well as a lovely inn with nice staff, Wi-Fi and decent hot showers available for $5, a public toilet in two minutes walking distance. For sure, the parking spot does not win a beauty contest in terms of nature experience, but what more could you possibly want? It’s a spot with all amenities possibly available to campervan people who don’t want to pay much. And if you’re not smart enough to understand what the rules of self-contained camping are in New Zealand, then you should probably not camp at all. It takes the right sticker everywhere, not just here.
Great spot right by a pub and in town. 8 designated parking spots rubbish bin and dump station. Council officers come around to check that you are CSC. Thanks Owaka .
Not friendly place to campers neighbors have to put up with it but they will call the ranger if no self contained sticker to get rid of you if they can. Ranger will drive you as far away as possible and left me in a place with no reception!! Might be different if your in a flash camper but us van people not welcome even the supermarket girl scowled when I said good morning.
Top marks Owaka! Great spot with dump station, clean drinking water and a toilet block nearby 2 min walk. Plus the best Blue Cod and chips ever. Friendly locals, a beautiful rural outlook and very quiet.
