Great museum, the butterflies were awesome. The interactive area was really great for the kids and adults alike. The photographic exhibition was terrific. Before we left we had a coffee and scone at the cafe which were very nice. Highly recommended, just have plenty of time for the visit.
We took a guided tour of the highlights of the museum covering Polynesian migration, Maori cultural artifacts, maritime history from colonial eras, evolutionary biology and ecology of species in Otago peninsula. We really enjoyed this tour and learned a lot. We were lucky to be the only ones joining the tour so it ended up becoming a nice private tour where we could ask plenty of questions. They also had a nice international collection from major civilisations including a whole mummy!, a collection representing fashion history and even a tiny representation of my home country - Sri Lanka.nnYou can book tickets for the museum at the front desk $10 for locals and $30 international. There’s a morning 11am and afternoon tour. We went for the morning tour with a lovely guide and the tour lasted about 1 hour.nnUnfortunately I didn’t have time to visit the rest of the museum I was looking forward to the butterfly garden, so will definitely revisit next time I come to Dunedin.nnIf you are visiting, I'd recommend aiming to spend at least half a day to a full day there to learn and enjoy at your pace. They also have a nice cafe in the building.
We only spend 2 hours with the kids here, time is not enough. We do not have time go the art museum. Might be half day is better, science museum has quite of things for the kids to play and explore. There is a butterfly room to see various butterfly and they are allowed to land on your hand.
We had a beautiful experience. Russell at the reception area was very friendly and helpful. For our short visit, he suggested to see the Butterfly House. Absolutely beautiful and interesting to see so many different butterflies. Lots to see and enjoy in the museum itself. A must visit
One of the best museums I have ever visited. There are three levels crammed with Māori culture, European settlers, native plants & wildlife, a mini science hands on interactive experience for kids and adults of all ages, a two level Butterfly House and a Planetarium showing movies. It has a large Cafe and gift shop on the ground floor.
