Great museum with a wide array of exhibits for all ages. The model ships are amazing to see and I loved learning more about the Moa. Will definitely come back and recommend to anyone wanting to spend a half day in a museum. There is something for everyone. The planetarium and butterfly room are worth the extra cost and planning. The gift shop also had some great items.
Great museum, the butterflies were awesome. The interactive area was really great for the kids and adults alike. The photographic exhibition was terrific. Before we left we had a coffee and scone at the cafe which were very nice. Highly recommended, just have plenty of time for the visit.
One of the best museums I have ever visited. There are three levels crammed with Māori culture, European settlers, native plants & wildlife, a mini science hands on interactive experience for kids and adults of all ages, a two level Butterfly House and a Planetarium showing movies. It has a large Cafe and gift shop on the ground floor.
Went back to Otago Museum after years away. As a local, main galleries are free, they wherr bright, clean, full of the usual natural history and cultural stuff. Feels pretty much the same as when I was a kid, which is fine. Paid $60 for two adults to get into Science Centre, butterfly house, and planetarium. Butterfly house was cool walking through, saw heaps of different butterflies flying around up close, nice touch. Interactive kids area engaging enough, planetarium show impressive. Staff friendly and helpful, place welcoming. Looked in the gift shop but skipped buying anything as everything way overpriced. $60 felt steep for the paid bits when so much is free. Good if you want the extras and butterflies, otherwise stick to free parts. 3 out of 5 stars from me.
Quite enjoyed my excursion to this museum, I'd suggest giving yourself more time to explore the exhibits as I didn't realize how dense some of them are. Highly recommend the animal attic and the world collection, they're organized in kind of a Victorian manner where there is a lot of beautiful objects packed tightly together from a variety of places and times, it's a little overwhelming but also exciting to see so much. Fair warning they have a real life mummyreal body in wrappings which I did not expect in one of the exhibits. I did not visit the paid exhibitions, but I'm sure those are also pretty good.
