Absolutely incredible nature walk. Its almost like walking back in time! Place is thriving with wild life that you can get very up close with. Great staff. Highly recommend everyone in the Wellington region to come out and see this magnificent place!
Nice little bushy area just a few minutes drive north of Waikanae. If your looking for a big of nature it is nice and well maintained especially the old track loop through the forest. There are a lot of birds to be heard. There are a few averies near the start with quite a few Tutara. A lot of ducks and lawns for a good picnic area. Friendly welcoming staff.
This place is well worth a visit! An extremely affordable family day out - half the price of the zoo, Staglands, Zealandia... Bring a packed lunch and have a picnic! The kids absolutely loved it when a bird landed on my shoulder! The staff are friendly and helpful too!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
What a gem! It's small and off the beaten track, so I'm so glad my accommodation had brochures. I reserved for the native bird close encounter online that night and was greeted by name when I arrived a bit after opening time the following day. It hadn't been clear what time the tour would start, but that worked out OK, as I had time to view the closer-in exhibits before it started at 11:00. Robyn took our small group just six of us through three aviaries and we got to see kākāriki, one kākā, blue ducks, and one kea up close and personal. As a parrot lover, I was in heaven and I felt it was well worth the extra price, especially as it goes to a good cause. Afterwards, I had a walk around the reserve, which took about half an hour. There are wide, well-maintained paths, with only the trail to the lookout handicapped-inaccessible. I saw heaps of birds: a silvereye, many tūī, kererū, and a fantail just as I was leaving. Just to add a comment to explain my wait to get in: a large family group was ahead of me and it sounded like they were attempting to redeem a credit. Anyway, that was what slowed my entry, but otherwise the place was uncrowded and my own entry I had prepaid was uncomplicated.
Lovely setting, very well presented. Great to see so many tuatara. The ducks were super friendly, loved to eat out of my hand and some enjoyed a cuddle to boot.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Lots to find and see. Safe environment and clear clean paths and walkways. Duck feeding for the kids, friendly knowledgeable staff. Stayed the night and got to free roam. Lots of lovely birds to find and hear.
Good walks and some interesting displays although still a number of enclosures where you're not sure if there are any creatures present. Make sure to bring your own food. friendly staff.
Wonderful spot for seeing NZ birds and a Kiwi exhibit experience as well. Terrific staff!! Truly friendly, knowledgeable and just plain wonderful. Highly recommend visiting here and spending some time with the 'winged' locals!
