About

New Zealand Bird Rescue Charitable Trust

Story

We are a passionate group of supporters who generously give up their time to rescue, rehabilitate and release orphaned, sick and injured birds.

Our centres accept and care for all New Zealand birds whether they are native, non-native or pet. We assist thousands of birds each year, many being the victims of cat attacks, road accidents, pollution (such as fishing line and nylon entanglements and botulism) or human cruelty.

We have been extremely lucky to have been bequeathed to us our Green Bay property by Jocelyn Grattan. Our vision is to build a Bird Rescue Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre at Avonleigh Road and develop it into a world-class facility.

Bird Rescue was originally formed in 1984 by foundation members Pam, Hilary, Lyn, Berend and Linda.

With the bequest of the Avonleigh property by Jocelyn Grattan the members formed the New Zealand Bird Rescue Charitable Trust so that they can further continue the work they have been doing for nearly 30 years.

"BirdCare Aotearoa provides care and rehabilitation for sick, injured, and orphaned wild birds. We have recently been facing unprecedented admission numbers, stretching our wildlife hospital to its capacity. From the now until 28th February 2023, we will only be open to admit new patients from 11am to 3pm. For birds needing help immediately please take them to your local veterinary clinic. If you find any seabirds or endangered species, contact DOC 0800 362 468 for help. Thank you for your understanding. We are currently seeking sponsorship to help increase our capacity. Please visit our website if you would like to support BirdCare Aotearoa's care of rescued wild birds."

My cat brought me a baby pigeon but in perfect condition so I called Bird are Aotearoa and a friendly staff member answered the phone saying just bring the bird. When you arrive you have a sense this is a special place . Everybody is volunteers and there is a vet on site daily. They really are passionate about helping the birds and you see that. You can give a donation if you want but its not compulsory. There is also an option to be a volunteer yourself. what a special place worth supporting and make sure it gets the funding they need to take care of the bird life. If you find a bird in need please take it to Birdcare Aotearoa and give the birds a place to heal recover and set free. So happy that too see that small at of kindness to birds go along way. Thank you for doing an amazing job.
Took a baby bird here that was still not strong enough to fly, turned up without calling as their website says. They are super easy to find, very friendly and professional with awesome facilities - they require a donation of your choice when bringing in an animal but they are worth every penny you can spare! Keep up the awesome work team!
Great place to take any injured wild birds. We found some ducklings orphaned on the motorway last year and more recently a Thrush whom had been attacked by a cat and this is where we took both to. Donations are optional but they help them fund food and medicine and provide wonderful care and rehabilitation. Only open until 3pm. You can also help by becoming a volunteer.
I took a young pidgeon over there. They left me with pamphlet with their contact number to call them to ask them about the bird. Thinking I have left the baby in good hands, I donated $50 to help with their cause. However, I phoned the next day and the lady told me they had put him down. I wish they would let me know before putting him down or at least give me a heads up about this possibility when I handed the bird over.
What a wonderful caring place. I will always speak highly of this place. First time I had to unfortunately go to this place as I found a wee pidgeon that had been attacked by a cat. Sadly the wee thing did not make it but the process of bringing it in and calling for an update has to be the most compassionate and caring response from a group of people that I have seen in a long time. Most people I have talked to about taking a pigeon into a birdcare centre has been why bother when its just a pigeon but to know there is a place in auckland that has a heart no matter what bird it is, is so touching as an animal lover. After this experience I will now be a monthly sponsor because the work these people do is remarkable. Thank you Birdcare Aotearoa.
All good people doing good jobs rescuing birds in the community I’ve this baby sparrow injured by cat at my backyard still alive when arriving the birdcare sorry for the little bird hope it’s going well being looked after
I saved this little guy in Titirangi road - his leg was injured. Called up the BirdCare Centre and they told me to drop him between 10-11. Really friendly service and appreciate that they could take him in. They even gave me a reference number so I can call on his status.
This place plays a key part in maintaining the bird life in NZ. We were privileged to visit and learn about all the good work that this organisation does. Keep up the good work!
Awesome place, the bird you bring and has a number so you can call and get an update which is so wonderful. Everyone I interacted with was lovely, and the birds are well cared for.
Amazing team, always so busy, but they never refuse a sick or injured bird. Amazi g people.
