The Matakana Cemetery Facebook page has been established to highlight the facts, memories and stories of the people who are laid to rest in the Cemetery. Our agenda is to gather information, endeavour to verify the facts and tell their story.
A community owned and operated Cemetery.
It is not owned by the Auckland Council and is managed by the Matakana Cemetery Board of Trustees with Valda Paddison as the Secretary.
History: The first recorded burial in our cemetery was in 1861. However the offical opened was on 23rd October 1875.
In 1908 the burial site register was created and many local families bought plots and were responsible for their maintance. However as people moved out of the area the keeping of the cemetery has fallen into the hands of a few local Volunteers.
Why not Volunteer for maintenance work during our Working Bee Days.
