Story

Mangere Lagoon is a lagoon in the Manukau Harbour, New Zealand. It occupies a volcanic crater or maar which is part of the Auckland volcanic field. Oval and about 600m long, it has a small restored scoria island remaining in the centre. In the 1930s efforts were made to drain the swamp for conversion to pasture, while in the late 1950s, earthworks for sewage sludge ponds in the lagoon removed the scoria cone and the crater was divided into ponds. Public demand for a better sewage treatment system eventually led to a land-based facility, and in 2003, the restoration of the area to a tidal lagoon was completed, with the sludge removed. The scoria cone was rebuilt with an extra flat portion added on the west side as an artificial bird roost.

Such a stunning place to go for a stroll or get a workout in! Very peaceful area, great views of Mangere Mountain and the lagoon! Fantastic place to catch a sunset, or go birdwatching! I always feel tranquil when I am here! Perhaps one of the most picturesque scenic spots in Auckland!
Nice walk with some well-needed shade on a hot sunny day. Links nicely to the Watercare Coastal Walkway. Interesting wildlife to be seen on this occasion.
Start here at Wallace road entrance, takes you around Mangere Lagoon, Ambury farm, towards Kiwi Esplanade entrance. You can turn back or continue on this majestic waterfront route to Mangere Bridge.
Nice walkway perfect spot for walking and jogging. Would recommend it, and go again.
Great walk to have here , not at all a rapey place only at dark I would steer clear of walking
Great spot for walking, running, bike riding. Watch out for raging Magpies and angry pukekos. Easy loop, all flat.
Good for runs with pram as is rather flat and not too bumpy
I enjoy the bird life and native trees within the lagoon area and it's close to car park no toilet rubbish bins 2 hour 15 minutes walk
Absolutely Beautiful at High tide . A Mass of mud banks at Low Tide. Some lovely walks / bike rides, even with all the Central Interceptor work going on at the wastewater plant. Where it can get a bit Smelly on occasion !!
