If camping/caravanning is not your thing, then book one of our cosy and comfortable cabins. Bring all the water toys as the estuary is excellent for fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, etc. We are extremely lucky to have a host of gorgeous walks in our area including the famous Great NZ short walk - Mangawhai cliff walk. Great spot on the estuary. There was only two other permanent people around. The amenities are really nice and modern. I did find the bathrooms extremely slippy after a shower and nearly fell over a couple of time. Also the 7min showers were too long for me and I wasted a good 4min just standing there waiting for the water to run out. Really nice and quiet, however I am sure it is a lot less tranquil in summer :
Unbelievable bad experience! The staff are the worst! Cant believe they are still in business. We are regulars that comes every now and then and after one complaint they kicked us out for talking softly till midnight! Bizarre!!!! I will make sure to spread the word to people to not come here. They took our money without any warnings at all. I think that you guys were childish and unprofessional… Also I think there is a protocol to follow when you kick people out… Will speak to professionals if we cant come to a solution. Unbelievable guys!
A campsite with a lot of rules, lots of "Not allowed" signs, a paranoia about external visitors, security codes and rules for toilets, kitchen and common areas, an unnecessary complicated gate/camera/code system for cars. The "must-pay-for-every-single-thing" kind of campsite. Kitchen has no equipment, no pots, pans, cutlery etc. Just the minimal. I guess it's a functional campsite but misses all the good things that makes a kiwi campsite warm and friendly.
Really beautiful spot. Unfortunately, it was dampened by the poor service and rude staff. Our experience started off with a rude women at reception who was extremely sharp when we asked if we could check in. When I was walking in after a wedding directly to my tent at midnight, a man approached me with a flash light demanding to see my wrist band. I apologised and I was met with being threatened to be ‘booted out’ and was told ‘it was a bootable offence’. And that I should go back to my car in Mangawhai central to retrieve the wristband. It was extremely unreasonable, aggressive and scared me to death. To top off leaving the park at 9am we wanted to leave ASAP our gate code did not work. My husband approached the reception where we were told ‘there must be a reason it wasn’t working’ and ‘you must’ve been letting people in and letting them tail gate’. We have never been confronted with this information and in total spent 5 hours at the actual camp site. Very strange behaviour. Every single one of the staff members we encountered were aggressive and rude. It is a real let down as the spot is beautiful, and a lot more focus needs to be on customer service, and general kindness. I highly recommend people find alternative accommodation when staying in beautiful Mangawhai, rather than give these people your money.
Kicked out and kept our $120 for 3 people talking till 12pm, about ‘past relationships’. No warning that we were too loud, just kicked out at 11am because the owner didnt want to have to refund the guy next to us, and decided it was better to kick us out and keep our money instead.
Morning Team, Unfortunately a fairly poor experience here. First of all, site and facilities are fantastic which makes this review more upsetting. Couldnt have been more excited for a day in the sun dropping my fishing rod of the pontoon. Our neighbours complained this morning that we were too loud and you have proceeded to ask us to leave. While we disagree with the complaint completely, we are in our 30s, had no music etc lets move on from there. We have packed up and left the sites tidy, how we found them. while i feel there were many other resolutions in everyones interest we have followed instructions. The reason for the bad review is that you refuse to refund us the rest our stay and will not come to the party at all or review our behaviour with other guests. I would also like to apologise for the rudeness from one of our party, she is understandably upset on having her weekend ruined unjustly and the lack of any refund for rest of booked stay. While we are all very heated it doesn't justify abuse and i am sorry for that. Please give me a call to discuss further, i left my number with reception. We do want a refund, thank you. Simon
The blonde reception staff member was so incredibly rude. She had an attitude right from the first word she said, needs to do some customer service training or get a job without customers because that attitude was really gross.
We stayed in a family holiday unit. We’ve stayed in many campgrounds around NZ. This is fairly priced for what you get. There are no where near as many amenities as somewhere like Papamoa but it’s also cheaper. As for the unit, it was ok but the doors were all very loud which woke our toddler. The unit had been painted and the doors were rubbing and needed a lot of force to open. The window on the lower bunk didn’t close properly and could be opened from the outside. We set our toddler up on a stretcher in the main bedroom as the bunks are opposite the bathroom so this way it was quieter for her. A lot of furniture in the unit so not much space for bags. We struggled to have three of us around the table on the small deck, you definitely wouldn’t fit five people eating together on the deck. Overall, an ok experience.
Rude and unreasonable staff. Please check other reviews before considering booking this campsite. However, there are multiple other local campgrounds that I would highly recommend!
We had such a great time and experience with our stay at mangawhai heads camp ground. All staff we're lovely and friendly. Camp security did an amazing job at looking out for other guests and was super friendly to us and our children, when playing spotlight with other campers. Everyone staying at the camp ground was super friendly aswell. Amenities were very clean and im glad there are signs saying no bikes and scooters around amenities as it would be a accident waiting to happen. Will definitely be back. Thank you for making our two week stay, relaxing and safe for our family and others.
