Story

The new Kaikoura Museum opened on November 23rd 2016, only 9 days after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit our region on November 14th. This is a state of the art Museum experience which showcases Kaikoura's rich and diverse natural, cultural and social history. Displays include excellent exhibits of Maori taonga, colonial life, whaling, surfing and memorabilia from Kaikoura's past. We also offer research facilities for historians or those wanting to find out more about their family history. A unique Museum with some exceptional displays and very knowledge staff, the Kaikoura Museum is a must see during your time in in the district. We are open daily from 10am - 4pm.

Having never been to Kaikoura before. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit to the museum. They had The Kaikoura Earthquake Exibition on, very interesting. Well done to the team of workers who rebuilt the main driving route State Highway 1 through this beautiful place, only took 10 months...
Gorgeous little place, full of history
A charming, quaint museum. As a domestic tourist I enjoyed learning more about the area and the 2016 earthquakes. We were happy to pay the $12 entry fee; the building was well maintained and the displays were well thought-out and presented. I would definitely recommend a visit for young people and children.
Good museum. Has a small earthquake information room which is very good at showing how Kaikoura recovered.
Highly informative...the earthquake exhibition was very moving. The stories from people who lived through this traumatic event is a tribute to the locals and their story
Awesome place to bring your kids. Library is up top which is also a plus
