My partner and I stopped by Joe’s Garage around 5pm today hoping for a simple early dinner. We had our hearts set on a burger and a beer.nnWhen the waitress arrived to take our order, she asked for my ID. I initially took it as a huge compliment, having just turned 40 in January. However, the situation quickly escalated into something much more serious than it really needed to be.nnI didn’t have my purse with me but offered to show her a clear photo of my licence on my phone. When she explained that this wasn’t an acceptable form of identification, I was more than happy to walk back to the car to retrieve my physical licence. When I returned, I was greeted in a rather sarcastic manner and told that my Australian driver’s licence wasn’t valid either. I completely understand that ID checks must be taken seriously, but the situation was then escalated to the manager and discussed in front of the entire restaurant.nnFor context, I was born in Christchurch, New Zealand and have only recently relocated back here from Australia, so being told that my legitimate government-issued Australian driver’s licence was not acceptable felt both confusing and incredibly uncomfortable. What should have been a quick and discreet ID check instead turned into a very public ordeal when all we wanted was a simple burger and beer before heading home on our Sunday evening.nnAfter I had promptly retrieved and presented my physical licence, the manager rather patronisingly repeated that it wasn’t a valid form of ID and said “this time we’ll let you go,” as though I had done something wrong or needed special permission to enjoy an alcoholic beverage. Being spoken to like a child, in front of other patrons, after providing perfectly valid identification felt unnecessary and extremely humiliating.nnAt that point, my partner and I decided it was best to simply leave rather than spend a penny there.nnOn the plus side, we ended up going next door to Burger Beast, where we enjoyed one of the best burgers we’ve ever had… and a beer without an issue in sight. Safe to say we’ll definitely be returning there instead Delish.
I’ve been to Joe’s Garage many times and it never disappoints. The food and drinks are always great, and the staff are super friendly and accommodating. We had a family lunch there yesterday for my son’s 3rd birthday, with 14 people and a baby in a pram. They set up a long table for us with a “Happy Birthday” sign and balloons, which was such a nice touch. All of our meals were delicious and came out quickly.Thank you to the team for making it such an easy and enjoyable celebration — we’ll definitely be back!
Polite staff but unfortunately we had to ask for water while other tables were given water when they sat down. Prices pretty standard and food was good. Nice open plan site with a sports bar type feel and mega high ceilings. Has a reward scheme that kicks in straight away if you scan the qr code and fill in your details. Overall I'd def go back. Booked in advance so no wait.
Went for an 18th birthday meal. Great service, the staff even brought out balloons and a banner! Fabulous food, and attentive service without being intrusive. The pizzas were really tasty and a great size. The chips with gravy went down a storm. The portions were so big we came home with a doggy bag.
Joes Garage is awesome! We had our staff work-do here and it couldn’t have been easier to arrange. The staff are friendly, positive and super helpful when ordering for a large group and the food is plentiful, delicious and arrives quickly. Joes Garage is a firm favourite for its flexibility and consistency. We have dined as a couple for breakfast Gorgeous George is my favourite! and dinner as well as with family groups with kids and for our latest staff event. Every single time is a great experience. A well run operation that is professional but relaxed and caters to a wide variety of needs. Check it out!
