Story

Horse Trekking Lake Okareka offers horse treks from 30 minutes to 3 hours at a pace to suit the rider.

Explore 1500 acres of a working sheep and cattle farm. Trek through 500 acres of native bush between the volcanic Lake Okareka, Lake Tarawera and the famous Blue and Green lakes.

You will experience stunning panoramic views over Lake Okareka, Lake Okataina and Lake Tarawera with the majestic Mount Tarawera beaming down on you. We have horses to suit all abilities from first time riders to people who have ridden all their lives.

The staff were lovely and made us feel very comfortable on the horses. The horses were also super friendly and the trek itself was beautiful. We got to see some fantastic views! Would highly recommend !
First time ever getting close to a horse! Due to be terrified at the sheer size of this animals! However the girlfriend pulled me by the ear and got me to overcome the fear. Lucy and the young ladies at the stables were more than helpful and kind in taking their time with me and helping me relax. Due to my height I was on "Big" Joe, who has been their from the beginning and I was assured he could do the 1 hour trek on his own. They wasnt wrong. Big Joe and I were a match made in heaven. I sat down and he did the rest. By the end of the ride I wanted to go faster and felt like a cowboy. I can 100% say I have overcome my fear and would recommend this to anyone. Thank you so much Lucy and the girls for helping me with this!
I would recommed this horse trekking to everyone!! We went out for 3 hours. The view is amazing and the guides we had Lori and charlotte were so fun and friendly. It was absolutely a blast! Also the horses feels so safe!
Had an enjoyable experience with Lucy. Booked a private tour for our group and it was catered to our beginners level. The views are breathtaking- we were taken to a hilltop with stunning views of the lake and farms. Highly recommended to try if you are in the area.
Thoroughly enjoyed this! We booked for a 60min trek but had to go for a 90min one instead as there weren't enough guides to do a separate 60min trek for the same slot. If you're a first time rider like us, 60mins would probably be sufficient to get the hang of things and thrill of riding the horses. Although we ended up with the longer trek, still good since views were magnificent. The horses were easy to ride, they naturally follow the rest of the group apart from the occasional stop to snack on grass, drink water or a "toilet break". There were 2 sheeps on the property too that were accustomed to strangers and would actually approach in hopes of food or a rub.
