Hells Gate - New Zealand's Only Mud Bath and Spa

About

HELL'S GATE GEOTHERMAL PARK, MUD BATH AND SPA - Rotorua's MOST ACTIVE Geothermal field accompanied by New Zealand's ONLY Mud Bath and Spa!

Story

Hells Gate Geothermal Park is raw, angry and a little ugly. This Maori owned valley is steeped in culture and is known as the fiercest of the geothermal areas in Rotorua!

The Hells Gate valley features hot-water lakes, New Zealand’s largest mud volcano and also the largest hot water waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere. Hells Gate is the geothermal park where the smell comes alive bubbling to the surface with purpose and intensity.

Here you can get hands on with the earth and the Maori culture as you stroll through this untamed wonderland. Learn to carve and weave flax as the Maori people do and you can take away your efforts as a memento of your time with us!

At the Hells Gate Spa get down and dirty in the only geothermal mud baths in New Zealand with beautification minerals which help to clear the skin, all before you relax in the mineral spas. If your looking for something truly one of kind try a Wai Ora Massage based on the traditional Maori style of massage known as Mirimiri, which not only relaxes the body, but through karakia (Maori prayer) relaxes the mind as well.

There are several tier of the experience, some allow access to other type of pools but it's not clearly marked or explained so it's confusing as to which pool we're allowed to go to while which may be off limit. The small pool where I spent the majority of the time have a good view directly to the geothermal. Most of the time I've had the pool to myself because of the limited shade and not being too busy as border is still closed. Overall a good experience.
Hell's Gate is truly an amazing experience and if you're in doubt, it is certainly worth the price. My partner and I did The Hell's Gate Experience and took advantage of the complimentary guided-tours on offer during this time and this was the best decision we could have made. Mark, our guide, really made the experience priceless. He was extremely knowledgable and charming. The walk around the property is beautiful and learning about the geothermal activity and the cultural significance of the area makes bathing in the mud and sulphur spas after the walk a really special experience.
Great New Zealand experience! My husband and I did the whole Hell’s gate experience which included a Self-Guided Geothermal Walk, Maori Carving, and Mud Bath & Sulphur Spas. I highly recommend doing the whole experience. The walk was easy and you get to see lots of different geothermal activities. We loved all the different names – Baby Adam, Mud Volcano, Inferno Pool, etc. After our walk, we did Maori carving and we had so much fun. You get to keep your carving which is a great souvenir. After the walk and carving, we relaxed in the mud pool which was weird and great at the same time. We have never experienced anything like that before and we acted like two kids – putting mud all over each other and giggling. Finally, we relaxed in 40 degrees sulphur spa before heading back to our apartment. Overall, it was an amazing experience.
Very friendly and welcoming staff greeted us on opening for our mud and spa experience. I thoroughly enjoyed it, the facilities are very good and we'll set out. Some say it's too expensive, but where else can you go for a mud bath. For me it's definitely worth the visit and the money.
Hot dry walk. Very cool landscape and geothermal activity. Could do with more detailed information about what's going on under the ground and on the surface. Pools was the best part by far. Glad it was a quiet day. Would be crowded with many more there. Showers with soap provided after Clean and tidy housekeeping
Nice mud interior design, crew members were nice n fun but personally this sulfur makes me sick, not go off from swin suit, towel and the whole body for few days. Skin.... seems bit softer but smells like dead body.
Love this place. Haven't been here in 20 years and it's still just as great as I remember it. My kids loved it too. I will definitely be doing the whole body mud bath next time. What a great place! And great staff! Thank-you for the great memories!
This was a truly fascinating and worthwhile experience. It really makes you understand and appreciate the earth. Mark, our tour guide taught us about the area, the natural environment and about the Maori culture definitely go guided if you can. Then we did the baths, which were very relaxing. Worth the visit if you visit Rotorua.
We've done both the mud/sulphur baths as well as the Geothermal walk, and we love it!! I enjoy reading the little information along the walk and also where they got the name from. The walk itself is nice and quiet and soothing it was end of the day for us so we were the only ones in there. I am slightly disappointed we didn't get to do the greenstone carving which stated online that its part of the tickets - unless there's something I'm missing, but there was no staff at the station, roped off and dark. But overall, both our experiences there were amazing. The only thing I would say is if you are bringing an infant, carrier is the way to go. We were told pram is fine, but the path has lots of big rocks which makes it difficult to push some times, esp when you cant see them while pushing. I had to guide my husband and let him know about the big rocks - and we have a really good pram!
Great place. We did the self paced tour and wandered around the whole place. Finished with the mud bath and hot springs spa. Big recommend!
