This page will provide the Canterbury community with information regarding halal certified foods, available to those in the Canterbury district.
As Qur’an 2:168 states Muslims are allowed to eat what is “good”- pure, clean, wholesome, nourishing and pleasing.
All is allowed except that which has been specifically prohibited by God, otherwise known as haram. Such food and drinks include, Blood, flesh of swine, alcoholic beverages, sacrificial meats for the purposes of idols, dead meat (carcass of an already dead animal), meat which wild animals have already eaten, and meat of an animal that had died from blunt force.
Through a quick and somewhat merciful method, Muslim slaughter their livestock by slitting their animal’s throat whilst repeating the words “In the name of God, God is most Great”. This gives Gods permission and recognises their life as sacred. It follows the ideal that one must only kill for one’s lawful need for food.
The meat is prepared through zabihah/halal meat.
As some Muslims will refuse to eat meat where the method of slaughter is unknown, it is important that the Islamic community is educated on the whereabouts of certified halal food eateries. This page will provide the Canterbury community with this such information, available to you in the Canterbury district.
