Story

I'm a classical guitarist based in Auckland, New Zealand and am available for performing engagements and guitar lessons. I have a Masters degree with first class honours in classical guitar performance and have recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Teaching in music education, both from Auckland University. If you are interested in having me play at a function or event, or are interested in guitar lessons, please feel free to contact me. I teach all students, beginners to advanced, young & old - all are welcome. The guitar lessons are held at several locations throughout Auckland, including Botany, Meadowbank, & One Tree Hill.

John has been a wonderful guitar teacher for the past 2 years I have been taking lessons with him. I had been playing electric guitar for about 6-7 years before taking lessons with John and was largely self taught with minimal understanding of theory.   Since taking lessons with John I had learnt how to read sheet music within a couple of months and had greatly expanded upon my understanding of the instrument. I look forward to each lesson each week as John has a great sense of humour and is very understanding of what a student requires to progress. I highly recommend John as a Guitar Teacher.

I have been receiving guitar lessons from John for over 3 months now and have found him to be very good and completely professional. I travel with my job and John has been very helpful in allowing me to reschedule “catch up” lessons from time to time if needed. His style is clear and concise and he makes the lessons fun.  I have already reccommended a friend to get lessons from John and would not hesitate in doing so again to anyone who is looking to learn how to play classical guitar.

After trying to teach myself guitar and not progressing I decided to get lessons. John Wakelin was recommended to me, and after half a year of lessons I have found that my playing has improved rapidly. John caters for all ability levels with particular emphasis on establishing and maintaining good habits and techniques. John provides a professional but relaxed and fun learning environment. I work various shift patterns and have found John very accommodating in scheduling my lessons to suit. He is also very flexible when it comes to rescheduling missed lessons due to illness or work commitments. I would not hesitate in recommending John to any guitar student.

I learnt guitar from John for over six years from the age of 11 until I was accepted into the New Zealand School of Music in 2015. John taught me almost everything I knew about classical guitar, right from how to read music to how to prepare for a university audition. His consistency in teaching style and contagious passion for the guitar kept me hooked, and now it is what I am building my career around. John was a great first teacher.

My name is Roger Leitch and have been having lessons from John for over 4 years. He is an excellent teacher and gives me just the right pieces to expand my skill. He is easy to contact  by email and phone and responds promptly to emails. He also has been accommodating by allowing a catchup lesson for when I was away on holiday. His website is very informative with many tips for the budding guitarist. I would not hesitate to recommend John to anyone starting guitar or wishing to progress to university guitar studies.

I am have been playing guitar for years when I wanted to progress further in classical guitar and found John to help me with this. He is a wonderful guitar teacher, extremely knowledgable and very patient especially with one who has picked up habits from other ways/styles of guitar playing. He requests high standards from students, and this is done with gentle persistence and a lot of humour. John is always very accommodating with his time, diligently in contact by phone, email and text when arranging lessons to suit, and very kindly offering make-up lessons when the situation appropriated the requirement.

Hi, my name is Kevin and I am one of Johns more senior students in the over 60's age bracket, which I am sure presents its own challenges for the teacher, however his patience and unique teaching style together with his quirky sense of humour makes every lesson a pleasure. His impressive list of qualifications are deserving of respect and give students the confidence that they are receiving the best quality tuition. I can say with honesty that the past 2 years or so of tuition have been a pleasure and I feel that I am slowly realizing a goal of studying classical guitar that I have had for many years thanks to Johns teaching.
