dropped the soap in the boarding house showers not a fun experience will not make the same mistake again had to get hospitalized for interior bruising : but lowkey liked it 5 stars!!!
Katrina Boyd is the worst teacher I have ever had, she is racist to all students who are not All White or from a New Zealand origin. She decides to pick on specific black students and make their lives a living hell. She should be fired, she should have never passed into being a teacher and should not be allowed to work with any students young or old. If the school is seeing this an inspection of Katrina Boyd’s classroom should’ve taken place when I was in my final year, but it should be looked into by the school.
Despite its reputation, Christchurch Boys' High School is a very average experience. The staff are fantastic but they simply don't have the facilities to teach as effectively as they could. Students are valued almost solely for their sporting achievements. You'll notice that the overlap between the First XV and the monitors appointed in Year 13 is 1:1. Nick Hill is a bit of a tyrant and will sit you down in assembly to lecture you about his political thought of the day. He doesn't value student input. One of my few experiences with him was him disregarding mine because it was negative and instead looking to hear from more of a yesman. I remember him making us all take a "resilience" survey about our beliefs with some questions about views on race/religion/sexual orientation that in fact was not anonymised or confidential. He then said he'd go on to target the troublesome responders in that survey. This was only aired in a private student executive meeting of course. He's also been involved in several controversies and rumors with staff but he'd be the type of man to take me to court on libel if I went into detail. I do remember you reading out a fake email I sent you to the whole school though so thanks for the good laugh. The facilities aren't great at the moment. I remember shortly after I started we lost the tennis courts and a section of the field to a "temporary" learning block. Those courts are still out of action. The millions that have been spent went into a hall and a set of open space classrooms with a library down the middle. Because yes, when you're studying there you want students coming through every 50 odd minutes. Let's not consider the greater ramifications here. The school's motto of Altiora Peto is said so often it almost reaches the point of irony. It's a bit like that one scene from Jojo Rabbit. I think it's been going downhill ever since it was painted onto the side of that tent in Egypt trust me, you'll hear about that. It's not all doom and gloom and as I said the staff do really try their best despite it all. A shout out to Mr Dacre, Mrs Burrowes, Mr Boomer, Mr Finch sorry I never said 'hi' back to you in the hallways, Mr Head, Mr McCleod, among countless others. You really do make it worthwhile. Overall, if your kid is into rugby or cricket it's a great option. If they're academically inclined look elsewhere.
Went to this school a few years ago. poor at best. -In short do not send your child here- -Pros Decent subject variety, and good learning support for those with learning disabilities diagnoses. Good canteen food and prices as i remember. -Cons Honestly it’s a really horrible, toxic learning environment with majority of teachers more interested in making it to the end of the year rather than engaging their students. School uniform is horribly overpriced and from what i remember rather poor quality. School’s budget is more focused on the rugby pitch rather than investing in what the students really need. Schools administration is really unorganised, promotes really pathetic learning strategies and outcomes and will not support or adapt any learning for the average student. The few good teachers are overworked, visually tired and stressed, and on a unsustainable salary while not getting the recognition they deserve. Teacher turnover rate is higher than the boys coming from deans bush The bottom line is this school will not support your child unless they are on a rugby scholarship. You are more likely to cause your child trauma and permanent emotional turmoil than getting them a decent education. To the Admins, i know you have a reputation of taking down bad reviews, i will be reposting this if it is removed
This school isn't that great, the teachers seem incredibly over worked, and tde ones that aren't, really don't care about your learning. Students here are alright at best, it can be hard to make friends, and bullying often gets swept under the rug. unless it could hurt the schools image. there is a mild hatred towards LGBTQIA+ peoples, however there is a stronger acceptance for them, though the boys collectively seem to hate pride month. -------------------------- The school isn't all bad though, there are great sporting opportunities, as well as many students run clubs. The variety in subjects is nice and allows the students to learn what they want. A lot of the teachers are nice people and are great to talk to. ----------------------------- In conclusion, CBHS in a decent school if you're into sports, however for academia I'd suggest looking elsewhere. The teachers are nice but they tend to lack the ability to adapt their teaching to better the students, and often teach things by the book.
Good school for your son
Christchurch Boys' High School deserved the greatest school in NZ. Exellent teachers work in here continuely give my son lots of encouragement and fully support for both his academic achievement and sports. My son gains more confidence day by day. There are so many programmes and clubs for all boys with different personality and interests. My son makes lots friends here, these boys are very caring, polite, all with great manner, they strongly support each other. I am so glad to see the strong friendship like this, I am so sure it will benefit him through whole life. I am so impressive to choose this school for my son. Definitely 10/10, the best school.
Unless you are good at rugby I Would not recommend this school This school has has let my son down badly
