Beautiful location and surroundings. Just an hour south of Auckland, the location is remote but breathtakingly beautiful. You have the beach a 5 minute walk away and the facilities are good. Buildings are warm and have a heat pump/cooler. Our unit had washing services and a little kitchen, including a hot plate, microwave and fridge. Bedrooms each have their own bathroom. Very remote with minimal other eating facilities. Phone signal is very poor to none. Internet is there, but today has been dropping in and out
Holly from reception has been fantastic in helping me sort out my taxi. Really good and welcoming disposition and very customer-focused approach. Jasmine from the spa has also been great! Fab facial and bath. Sad I couldn't get a massage since some masseuse were out due to COVID, on holiday it was ANZAC week, or bereavement. Room is okay, could get better at cleanliness though. Quite dusty in some areas, lots of flies I counted 5 at a point but there was a fly spray available, linens also had some stains. Overall, it was a nice stay.
Location is superb and rooms are excellent. Beautiful sea views and clean rooms but service and food was well below average. We were part of a wedding group and one of my wife's nephew's ended up in hospital with food poisoning from some of the meat served at the wedding reception. I did not eat as my wife and other guests said some of the meat smelt off. There were three very young teenagers serving at the bar which ran out of beer after 1 1/2 hours and someone had to drive into town to pick up more beer which ended up being warm. The person behind the bar who was adding up the totals for beer and spirit purchases in there head constantly overcharged. I would not recommend the food served here or the service provided from very young and I suspect inexperienced staff. The continental breakfast was also below average as we had to ask twice for more bread for toast and dessert spoons. Preserved fruit was good but two of the glass containers were empty. Unfortunately service and food do not match the location and accommodation. The best rooms are the villas at the top as they are more modern and have the best views but also the most expensive.
Double charged and told 10-14 days to get refund when it was their error. Food at wedding was cold and steak very over cooked. Bar was closed during meal service without any notification. Outlook and accommodation amazing but expensive Obviously management don't care either. If I ran a resort like this I would absolutely contact anyone who gave me a bad rating...but no, a week later still nothing. I could go on complaining, like the fact they ran out of food for a plated wedding service. How can that occur!!! I think I was very generous with the 2/5 rating. If I was reviewing just the food and service it would have been 0/5
Castaways was the perfect venue for our wedding. Breathtaking views, on-site accommodation, fantastic staff and amazing food. We couldn't have asked for anything more. Thanks to Sophie and the Castaways team for making our day so special :
My daughter had her wedding there, and my wife and I spent a night nefore and after the wedding. The wedding went off without a hitch. Castaways wedding planners did a excellent job, venue was beautiful and accommodation very comfortable.Rooms: 5/5
My husband Anish Antony booked the 2 bedroom villa to surprise me and to celebrate my birthday on June 2nd night. We had a great day in here but a few things which would have been better - the fact that we selected the most expensive stay here, the buggy wasn’t working and we kind of felt that we were punished for choosing the best stay because all other cheaper stay option has its own car park! We had to walk from the villa to car park with our baby too cold and too windy at night a few times to get things from the car and to go to the restaurant! My husband also requested for a cake or a flower to surprise me on the day for additional cost, however the receptionist told him they don’t do anything like that but will only provide a cheese platter - he was upset telling this to me! Also, the fact that we were expecting five star stay, there weren’t any toiletries no brush no paste and no bathrobe and slippers! We also booked spa and stone-bath, both were great - however, we expected a bit more for stone-bath as we expected a beautiful view and a drink was included but we were shocked to see that the drinks were just water!
What a wonderful place Castaways is, amazing views. Lovely well maintained rooms and a great restaurant on site that produce nice food. Very friendly staff, special thanks to Chef Bhushan ‍. I was there for a business conference, however Castaways would be an amazing place to celebrate an important event at such as a wedding or birthday! Rooms: Great rooms Food & drinks: The restaurant provided great meals and drinks
We recently had our wedding at Castaways Resort on 18th February. We just wanted to give feedback about Sophie our Wedding Coordinator. Sophie was extremely efficient when dealing with our requests, queries and emails. She met up with us a couple of times to discuss finer details, such as for our accommodation booking and she was more than happy to have a video call when we couldn't meet up with her in person. Sophie was very professional in dealing with us and we never felt that we were bothering her with the emails we sent asking specific questions. She took the time to give us a tour of the venue when first choosing Castaways and her approach led us to believe we were in capable hands with Castaways. She was an excellent communicator with the rest of team ensuring the coordinator on the day Mei and accommodation staff knew our requests, we ended up having around 30 people staying over the course of 1 or 2 nights and nearly 50 guests attending our wedding. We were really impressed with how patient, organised and committed Sophie has been throughout the whole 9 months that we spent planning our wedding. Thank you Sophie for making our wedding day so perfect! We had lovely compliments from our guests as well.
Well what a disappointment this venue was and the sad thing is it has so much potential to be amazing but it's just not and because they still have customers coming through the doors they don't rectify any of the many problems. We stayed for 2 nights for a family wedding and there was alot of us. We had a studio which was ample room for us. Unfortunately it wasn't very clean and was in need of repair. The fridge smelt unpleasant and the bathroom door was broken. Tried to ring reception to let them know but nobody answered. After 4 times I gave up. We spoke to 4 other studio guests and they all had similar issues. Then there is the lovely aroma of the septic tanks which are very close to the studios. So be aware of that when you book. THEY STINK!! Couldn't have front door open cause the smell was horrible. Thankfully the wedding was beautiful that was until we had to deal with the children behind the bar who seemed so disinterested and we had to repeat our order multiple times cause they just weren't listening. Then came the food. It was cold. Really cold. Nothing worse then cold fatty lamb and cold kumara puree. Anyone wanting vegetarian meals had to wait an extra 2 hours. Then there is the joy of the complementary breakfast. This took things to another level. Just when you feel like bacon and eggs, toast and coffee, you get a buffet of danishes, chocolate cake, cold meats, stale bread, and the weirdest yogurt I have ever eaten. This maybe a continental breakfast in some countries but not in NZ. Know your crowd! Castaways needs a complete overhaul of all the old rooms and the staff. Put a great manager in here and get some staff that takes pride in their work and this place would be amazing. Definitely not worth the $620 for 2 nights the way it is now. Alot of family are heading back to Melbourne and won't be singing Castaways praises. The only thing it has going for it is the view and that's all that is keeping the doors open. Room was dirty and broken. Restaurant was terrible and staff in the bar need people skills urgently
