Play Therapy
Play therapy is an approach of therapy whereby children are given the opportunity to explore their feelings, express themselves and make sense of difficult experiences. In play therapy, toys are like the child's words and play
is the child's language (Landreth, 2002). Various mediums are used during play therapy such as clay, drawing, paint and sand. Each play therapy session varies in length but usually last about 30 to 50 minutes.
Who can benefit from Play Therapy?
Play Therapy is an effective intervention for children experiencing variety of presenting problems, such as
Behavioural Problems
Abuse
Grief and Loss
Family Violence
Separation/Divorce
Bullying
Anger
Anxiety/Stress
Illness
It can offer children a space in which the feelings these experiences generate can be expressed and contained. It cannot change what has happened but it can promote resilience within each child to enable him or her to discover a more hopeful view of the world. Play Therapy is appropriate for children of all ages, but is most often used for children aged between 3 and 12 years.
