Staff was very friendly. The museum is closed but they had an urban art exhibit called Thrive on. We quite enjoyed this! It takes you all over the building, including offices and conference rooms that have been converted into art. Great way to spend an afternoon.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Visited when they had the Dinosaur exhibit going. It was pretty awesome to see the mechanical Dinosaurs but was a rather over priced entry fee for what they had. Still something fun to see though. I've been to this museum several times over the years and not much has changed but that's fine by me. It is a cool experience for first timers or people who are nostalgic. Staff are friendly and very helpful so that is a huge plus. Will definitely visit again in the future.
We went and saw the Shift exhibition in February 2023. Tickets are $25 for adults $20 for seniors. An interesting contrast between the old, formal nature of the building and such contemporary art. You will find a great variety of styles. Well worth a visit.
The Canterbury Museum in Christchurch was one of our favourite places to visit, beautiful old building, very well preserved and looked after and definitely a must to see. We were a little short on time to see everything, but the extensive exhibition could take days, instead of hrs , to take all in. Highly recommended.
Our last visit to the musuem before it closes its doors for the refurbishments which look amazing! My kids have loved the opportunities to explore and learn. Look forward to seeing what pop up displays the team have planned.
Currently there is a special exhibition of street art. You have to pay to see this exhibition but it is well worth it. The whole museum, including sections which the public would not normally be allowed in, is covered from floor to ceiling, and sometimes the floor and ceiling too, with street art. There are a huge number of inspired creations. This is only a temporary exhibit open until April when the museum will be closed for five years for re-furbishment.
Love this place and visit atleast twice a year. There's usually an exhibit on and if not there's the awesome geology, historical costumes and NZ history combined with the old fashioned street. Then there's the remarkable Asian historical figures and beautiful relics of Ancient China and Japan. The antarctic floor uptop is most interesting with sounds and penguins and birds. My daughter loves looking at the ducks and different types of seabirds. The feeling in each floor of this historical building is truly amazing and nostalgic.
Great museum to visit. We managed to come here a couple days before the museum closed down for renovation. Only 1 level was open for visitors. Despite that, there were still plenty of informative sights to see. The staffs at the museum was really nice and friendly! Would love to see what the museum looks like after the renovations :Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Great museum to visit at any age, definitely recommend giving at least 30 mins to look at everything. Different from other places as there’s many different sectionsVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
The SHIFT Urban Art Takeover is undoubtedly the most unique and captivating museum I've ever set foot in! Essentially, it's a massive playground constructed where talented street artists showcase their work. Graffiti masterpieces adorn every surface. Be aware that there's a $25 admission fee, and the exhibit concludes on April 11th. I wholeheartedly suggest paying a visit before this incredible experience disappears.
