Amazing! Everything was fun, professional, organized, clean, and safe. Our guide was experienced and easily taught our whole group who had zero canoe experience everything we needed to know to navigate the river. They also cooked amazing food prepared by the staff think more gourmet, less camping. Fun by yourself, with friends, and the whole family! I stayed at the lodge before and after my 5 day trip, and it was nice too. Longer day trips are better for beginners because the canoeing gets spread out over more days so you paddle less each day and have more breaks! Thank you to everyone at Canoe Safari!
4 day trip was a perfect amount of time to see the river. Our guides Danielle and Wilson were outstanding and made the trip even more enjoyable. They had awesome local knowledge and we felt safe with them the whole time! Food was crazy good. The trip seemed very well planned out and when the river didn't play ball Wilson and Danielle were able to adapt and overcome to give us a great overall experience. 10/10
Fantastic family trip, five days down the Whanganui. We did this as an extended family group of seven people 4 adults and 3 teens 12-18 with one guide Simon — excellent guide, can’t recommend him highly enough. We were mostly beginner canoeists, but it was pretty easy to pick up with Simon’s expert tuition. On the first day we had two capsizes, and one on the third, out of four canoes. The weather was warm, so a dip in the water was quite welcome! Having five days meant there was time to stop and visit lots of little diversions on the way waterfalls, grottos, abandoned farms, etc. The canoeing was physically demanding at times, but never too much for us oldest participant was me, age in my early 50s, not all that fit. There were long periods of just quietly paddling through the beautiful scenery, chatting and telling riddles. We were kept very well fed, and dietary requirements were well respected dairy and gluten for one, another with peanut allergy. We were always in camp early enough to have time to relax each day, but tired enough to sleep early. Tents were comfortably spacious 2 people per 3-person tent and easy to put up my rating for 'the rooms' refers to the tents. Camping grounds had long-drop toilets tip — they tend to be less stinky during the day. We stayed in the motel in Ohakune the night before and also the night after the trip. Rooms were compact but comfortable.
Fantastic family 4 day Christmas trip down the Whanganui. Stayed in the lodge room with kitchenette the night before for easy packing of canoe gear and to be ready for early morning. All food on trip supplied with outstanding catering for some serious food allergies. Fast flow made the paddling fun, the banks muddy when disembarking and gave us time to stop in several beautiful side channels.very comfortable tent and sleep mat. Our experienced guide made the trip safe, fun and helped us learn canoe skills and a lot about the river.
Incredible experience with canoe safaris, couldn’t have wished for more or more highly recommend. We did a 4 day / 3 night Whanganui River canoe trip. Our guide Wilson was awesome, a really personable and experienced guide, also moonlighting as our group’s chef - the food was fantastic, not your normal camping fare! The river was beautiful and campsites well maintained. Kirsty and Phil run a really well organised business and take care of everything. Highly recommend. And Phil, I think Wilson deserves two packs of beer! ;
Just got back from an awesome 5-day canoeing trip down Whaganui River. We were led by Kenny and he was an amazing guide. Calm and unflappable, he exuded a quiet confidence which encouraged us greatly because of the unexpected storms and high river waters. We were never nervous because he was vigilant and always ready to help. The food was splendid too; we were well fed with breakfast, snacks, lunch, tea, dinner, and dessert! The equipment was in good condition and we felt like we were in safe hands and well taken care of at all times. Phil and Kirsty were prompt and friendly with their replies and went the extra mile to help us. Can’t recommend this place enough :
We spent the Christmas on the river with Simon as our guide on the 4 day trip. Highly recommended! Food was amazing, scenery was beautiful and everything was so well organized! We were lucky with the weather.Rooms: 5/5
Phil & Kirsty are beautiful souls and were so helpful in planning my canoe trip from travel, gear, lodging and everything in between. Our canoe trip was full of rain but that didnt stop the fun and the guides are well trained and provide great banter. The food was fresh and delicious and my experience was top notch. Def go with Canoe Safaris for your next canoe adventure!
My family and I had the most wonderful 4-day canoe trip down the Whanganui River. Very knowledgeable and personable guide, Simon, showed us helpful canoing techniques to feel safe and confident on the water and told us stories about the history of the area throughout the trip. Comfortable mat and tent, delicious meals prepared at each camping spot including special dietery requirements. Great laughs and a fun time had by all!
My husband and I signed up for the Rangitikei River 2 Day Safari. Phil was our guide on the tour. The trip was fun, challenging, exhilarating and we made some friends along the way with our fellow canoers and a special friend Doug ;. This was our first ever canoe trip and Phil made us so comfortable on the water. The river itself was fun with quite a few rapids, putting our training to test almost immediately. We had our fair share of capsizes, some because of inexperience, others just being silly. We were rescued swiftly every single time. He was very safety conscious and well prepared. Food - This is something one would not expect, but the food on the trip was fabulous, catered to dietary restrictions. We had hot meals for dinner and a good spread for breakfast and lunch of sandwiches with fresh home grown veggies and something to snack on regularly. We were definitely not a Hangry bunch. Stay - The overnight camp stay in the wilderness was fun and comfortable, we were provided quality tents and a good air mattress to sleep on. With all the canoeing we slept like babies. Highlights of our trip - Some tree jumps and swings, funny capsizes, a rescued sheep [by Phil the Rudder Boy] and good company. Would Definitely do it again and highly recommend it for first-timers or families.
