We came here for lunch on Monday and were lucky to score a table inside. There were heaps of cabinet options to choose from and a small lunch menu. This was a busy cafe even on a weekday but our food and drinks came out promptly. My favourite bite was the blueberry and custard cake which was delicious! I will definitely be back again next time I’m passing through Taihape
Tucked away on a side street, you could miss it, but don't. It is an extensive cafe with a wide range of food both hot and cold. The food is very good, and the atmosphere is relaxing. There is plenty of seating including some outside.
Brown Sugar Café is a must-stop if you're heading for a long drive through Desert Road. It’s a warm, loving spot attached to a camping gear and clothing shop, with a cozy wooden atmosphere. The coffee and food are both great, and it’s super child-friendly, too. There’s outdoor dining out the back and even a little play area for the kids. Clean restrooms , friendly vibes, and plenty of space to relax — I absolutely love this place .
Don't be tempted to stop at Waiouru when you get to the end of the Desert Rd; just 25 minutes further down State Highway 1 is Taihape and this absolute gem. Not immediately obvious from the main street, it is worth parking in one of the many roadside parking bays and walking 50m up the side road to the unobtrusive door that marks the entrance to Brown Sugar. Inside you'll find a delicious selection of reasonably priced savoury and sweet treats. There is plenty of seating indoors for those inclement Taihape days, or wander through to the quiet courtyard out the back, lovely and warm when the sun shines. Out here you'll also find the most civilised toilets on SH1.nnA special note for tea lovers: Brown Sugar gets it right. No teabag here, you'll get a pot of loose leaf tea with a strainer, a small jug of milk, and an extra pot of hot water. All of which produced four teacups of tea that lasted longer than it took for me to eat my large, delicious date scone.
Nice little spot for a quick bite. We stopped there on our way further south and I'm pleased, as the food was tasty and wholesome.nDefinitely like that the greek salad has giant green olives! A rarity but so good for those of us that prefer them to black olives!nThere are also cute things on sale.
