Story

Bottle Lake Forest is a production forest and recreational park located in Christchurch, New Zealand, approximately north-east of the city centre. It makes up the vast majority of the area of the suburb Bottle Lake. The visitor centre at the Forest's entry from Waitikiri Drive provides visitors with information about the different roles of Bottle Lake Forest. It also provides fresh water access, toilet facilities and parking.Production forestThe forest consists of Pinus radiata (pine) trees. It was planted in the early 1900s and covers 800 hectares of land, stretching from Burwood to Spencerville, and to Pegasus Bay on the east coast. Trees are felled and logged in a 30-year rotation by the Selwyn Plantation Board.Forest and wildlifeBottle Lake Forest also includes a number of native understory plants. Throughout the forest lies a carpet of indigenous moss, lichens, and common ferns - such as bracken, pigfern, chain fern, and water fern. Nearer the coast marram grass and tree lupin grow. During the autumn wood mulch and pine needles provide a habitat for several species of mushroom.

Great access and parking. The riding trails were in mint condition and would suit all abilities. Sheltered from the wind and rain thanks to the forest itself and was lovely looking at the beach on our rest stop. Easy access to the beech if you want a beach ride or swim mid ride!!
My husband, our children and I went out there last weekend with our bikes, what a wonderful place, it's so awesome to weave your way around the bike tracks... you can be in the forest one minutes and then on a road tack the next. I totally rate this place, we took a picnic lunch too.
The park provides a range of tracks from level stroller friendly to more rugged forest paths. While the pine woodland is low lying and next to the beach, there is enough ups and downs to keep the mountain bikers happy. It can be accessed at several car parks and the number 7 bus runs within a few hundred metres.
Great spot for some exercise with separate tracks for walking biking or even horse riding. I take the dog down and he runs around as happy as can be while I collect wood and pinecones for the fire. It is important to note that the maps provided are far from accurate, and some tracks are prone to flooding.
Great track for beginners. This has everything one needs. It's tailor made and you'll find track for horses, cyclists, and muggles. You'd at least see 20 paw buddies on your way back.
This is a great place to walk or bike the roads however you feel there are many different roads so get a map from the ccc website of bottle lake forest park also recommend taking a rain jacket if the forecast says it might rain because you might be a long way from your car
I come here on the daily. Great atmosphere, bird life, shade from the heat, there's a lovely pond in the middle surrounded by birds and cool bugs dragonflies great place to take the kids and dogs for a Hīkoi and a bike ride
Went for a walk through with my daughter. Good walking trails to follow so there is no chance of going off track. The fairy doors were a great addition and on the other side of the park is a small hill with a view of the ocean. Was beautiful.
Had a great walk on a cool day. The walking trail was easy going and I saw people of all ages on the track. It's great that it has separate bike and walking tracks. The park is dog friendly too.
Very much enjoyed this trail! good for mountain biking or just a few hours of walk. Such a lovely place it feels like you’re being hug by those big pine trees. I would walk again on this trail whenever we go down south.
