I did the diploma in patisserie here, I started in the beginning of last year. My experience here was genuinely awful, the tutors are out of control! I think they struggle to understand the concept that everyone learns differently and at different paces, we’re literally there to learn and for a lot of us it’s our first time doing some of these things! I was constantly getting told off, yelled at and told I’m too slow.. not a very encouraging environment, I felt as though my tutor had some sort of disliking towards me. In the end I was so miserable, I’d lost all enjoyment for it and I was unable to handle the pressure which was also causing me intense anxiety in my exams and I was unable to perform my best. I ended up dropping out two months before I was supposed to finish my first year. Now iv got a student loan I need to pay back but no qualification to show for it. I put two stars cause despite the horrible experience I had. The course is well structured and the stuff they teach is really informative and interesting. They have a good team of people that help students with disabilities and mental health, I was offered support if I wanted to report my tutor but I honestly didn’t have the energy. I was burnt out which was sad really cause I only wanted to go there to learn and gain new skills but I felt like I was being constantly picked on, anyway I definitely wont forget my experience here and hope things can change for the sake of future students cause at the end of the day this is students career & future at stake. And the students need guidance.

My concerns are mainly about the admission process and international student support. The university provides very limited assistance regarding admissions and campus life. Even when you have important queries, responses can take 1–2 weeks, which is not ideal. They promote services such as a student hub or live chat with counsellors, but in my experience, these are largely unresponsive. When replies do come, they are often brief, generic, and lack clarity, especially for important matters like visa-related questions.nnAnother issue is the value for money. The university is currently ranked around QS 400, yet international students pay fees comparable to those charged by top-tier universities in New Zealand. Given this, I would strongly recommend considering better-ranked options such as the University of Canterbury which also has a relatively lower cost of living than Auckland or the University of Auckland, which is ranked around QS 65. The tuition fees for similar programs are almost same across these institutions.nnIn my opinion, Auckland University of Technology should only be considered as a last option, if you are unable to secure admission into your preferred universities or if your academic profile limits your choices.nnAs for the quality of education, I cannot comment from personal experience since I have not studied there. However, based on the information and research I have gathered, it seems more sensible to choose one of the higher-ranked universities mentioned above.nnThank you.
AUT certainly has an impressive city campus with a latest addition of robots to educate and research with. Very impressed by the students. Light flood huge atrium connecting buildings and area to have lunch with microwaves, sink and seating. Plus cafe that has salads and hot food as well as sandwiches, as in town there’s no supermarket to dash to between lectures.nWent for an invent and that was extremely well organised in a very good large lecture room with excellent acoustic.

It is not safe for the LGBTQ+ community, nor for those with strong, independent minds. It is a space where mediocrity is rewarded openly, and excellence is quietly resisted. In short, it is an environment that exploits people’s lack of knowledge of certain rules, and stands with those who hold power rather than those who hold truth.nnWhen I faced bullying and hatred from some students, I did not find a system that protects—I found an institution that tried to make me doubt myself. They told me to go to a psychiatrist, as if the problem was my awareness, not their corruption. As if rejecting injustice were an illness, and silence the cure. I have evidence of this.nnImagine someone less aware, less confident, believing this narrative. They go, they are sedated, numbed, and pushed down a path that may have no return. This is not mere negligence—it is the quiet manufacturing of psychological defeat.nnBut I was not that person. My awareness, my confidence, and my intellect were my weapons. They could not manipulate me, so I chose to leave. I changed universities, and I chose myself. Only then did I feel something simple yet profound: safety.nnIf this had happened in countries where human dignity is truly upheld—such as some Scandinavian nations—the response would have been decisive: immediate dismissal, and possibly legal consequences, even imprisonment, for those involved in such conduct, whether it was the teacher Rose, Saeed, or the student officer Arnot. Because justice there does not negotiate, and harm is not excused under any pretext.nnHere, however, the tragedy is not only in what happened, but in the lack of awareness in addressing it. It is as if some institutions are still trapped in outdated eras—where the victim is treated as the problem, and silence is seen as the solution.nnThe only thing I benefit from is the cheap printing.nnThis is more serious than it appears. When you lose your sense of safety in a place that is supposed to shape your future, you do not just lose an educational experience—you lose a part of your trust in the world.nnThis is not a complaint. It is a testimony. One that I place before you, so you may think, question, and perhaps, protect yourself.
