Had to connect our Singapore flight from Auckland. We flew in from Christchurch and arrived on an earlier flight. The international flights are in another terminal so we had to walk to the free shuttle buses that took us there which took 5 minutes. It was easy and well signed so you can't get lost. A great experience and well done to the people of New Zealand
International arrivals: First impression was that it was a very clean, quiet and modern airport. The Maori King carved gateway was a great introduction to the country’s history. Directional/information signs were nicely placed all around and were easy to follow. If you’re from a country that usually drives/walks on the right lane, you need to start changing your mindset and walk on the left lane. Depending if you have goods to declare or not, you get directed to a customs agent, once cleared, get a free luggage cart, wait for your luggage, pick it up, and then head out to the arrivals for transport. We had someone pick us up so it was pretty standard.nnInternational departures: We got dropped off at the departure area, got some free luggage carts and headed inside for check-in Delta. We had an irregular sized baggage boxed that got redirected to the oversized section free of charge. Walked up to the second floor where there were a bunch of retail and restaurants. Entered the security checkpoint with no issues, passed by the duty free shops and the various retail & restaurants. There were a lot of places to sit and chill while waiting for your flight. It was a really clean, modern looking area.
It's larger than what it looks, few stores to look at but noticed some are repeated which doesn't wow a fellow traveller.nnThe souvenir shops are also scarce which kinda caught me off guard.nnThere is some construction going on, so maybe there's more to come? Overall easy to navigate, not many food options either...
This review is conducted while the ongoing renovations were happening. Domestic airport linked to the International Airport. This is scheduled to be finished in 2 or so years approximately.nnIn the meantime , this is what the airport looks like in August 2024, walking from the designated drop-off point into the international terminal.nnMost of the walk from taxi to terminal is under cover.nnBe interested to see the final product and rate how streamlined the airport is after the renovations.nnAt the moment, I rate it a 3 for accessibility.
A 24 hour airport with plenty of seats around to lie down or watch movies. The McDonalds inside is also open 24 hours, and there are other cafes inside that slowly open from 4-5am. It is relative warm inside, with several bathrooms. Would be great if there was a paid lounge access or shower facilities. The airport though is quite clean and gets busy from 4:00am onwards, for the first flight. Inside the airport, there are a few convient stores, NZ branded clothing shops and a handful of luxury brands. The duty free has a few of the key NZ alcohol, souvenirs and confectinaty to choose from.
