I found this airport easy getting in and out of by bus, and I enjoyed spending some time here awaiting for an international flight. Customs process entering the country was a breeze. The concourses could move crowds really well, gate areas were large, and large number of retail outlets and restaurants make AKL a great airport.
Auckland Airport is the largest and busiest airport in New Zealand. It opened on 29 January 1966. The first commercial jet flight left for Sydney in November 1965. In 1977, a separate international terminal was built. A major expansion took place in the 1990s. Today, more than 18 million passengers use the airport every year. Around 50,000 people pass through it each day. About 30,000 people work at the airport every day. The airport handles NZ$34 billion in goods each year, and cargo values have risen sharply. A new domestic terminal is being built and will open in 2029. It will have 12 gates and connect with the international terminal. In September 2025, a large airfield expansion was completed. It added space for 11 more jets. The airport also spent nearly NZ$190 million on better roads. In the future, passenger numbers could reach 38 million per year by the 2040s.nnAuckland Airport was a mixed experience for me. Landing, passport check, and getting my bags were fast and the staff were friendly, and it was the same good service on my way back too. But going through customs and border control took a very long time. I declared some items, thinking it was the right thing to do, but then I had to wait almost an hour just to get a sticker on my passport, then wait again in another line, and in the end it felt like nothing changed even though I declared my items. It took me more than two hours to get through the international terminal, and I almost missed my next flight because of this. I also noticed the airport building itself is confusing. There are no quiet areas, no garden, and no place to just sit and watch the planes. The shops and food places are placed in a messy way, so it is hard to find your way around. Many of the workers, especially at the drop off and pick up areas, looked young and unsure of what to do. Some of them were busy talking to each other instead of helping people who clearly needed directions. I also tried the newer valet parking area, but it was far from the terminal and not covered, so it was not good when it was raining. Overall, I think Auckland Airport is fast in some parts, like passport control and baggage claim, but it really needs to improve on customs processing time, staff training, and the way the terminal is organized.
Auckland International Airport is upgrading. It's already very good for me! It's welcoming, instructions are all clear, open, wide and clean.nI would like to mention the MacDonald inside the airport. It's the same quality and same price as all the MacDonalds in the country. As I have different experienced in some MacDonalds in other countries. You can't even use the MacDonald app. to place order and of course the prices are different!nWell done New Zealand!
I was flying from Auckland domestic within New Zealand for the first time. The airport was quite small with only one gate. You waited in the big hall with everyone until your aircraft was called. Quite interesting experience. The luggage came out within 10mins once the my return flight landed! I had my favourite popcorn on the flight as well;
Auckland Airport was awesome! I had to wake up super early at 5:30am because we were flying to the Gold Coast, and I was so excited. Our flight was at 10am, and we got to go into the Koru Club, which felt really fancy.nnThe food was really good, there were comfy seats, and it was cool getting to relax before the flight instead of just waiting at the gate. The airport was easy to get around and the whole morning felt like the start of an adventure.nnFlying out from Auckland Airport was a great experience and I can’t wait for the next trip!
