The cafe looks like it is a house that has been refurbished to have multiple dining rooms. Walked in and had a choice of dining area and decided to go with the one that looked onto the river. It was a rainy day but if it wasn't it might have been good to sit outside with better views of the river. Service was really good and friendly. She waited for me to find a place to sit before giving me water and a menu. Went over the specials and looked over occasionally to see if I was ready to order. i went with a hot chocolate and a open steak sandwich. The sandwich was one of the best ones I've had. The steak was cooked nicely and it was served over a really crispy piece of bread. The onions were sweet and tasty and the salad greens were dressed. Everything had a really nice flavour and really delicious. Best part as that the sauces dripped onto the fries and they became really flavourful. I even took a caramello slice away for the drive back to Auckland and it was a nice sugary hit. It is a bit pricey for a cafe around the $20-25 mark but if all the food is as tasty then it's not too bad. Only downside is the parking. Most of Somme Parade is yellow lined and there is only a few spaces near the cafe. I had to park down the road a bit and walk up but the food was worth it.
My go to place for catch ups with my friends. Great coffee and menu items are delicious. Plus you always get a little treat with your coffee : try their degustation menu - highly recommend !
Had brunch here - amazing food, and FAST service - very good coffee too, and so lovely to have a decent view of the river - really hard to find in Whanganui!
Great spot. And River views nice food really friendly staff. Close to central City
I had the pleasure of a late lunch at 25 Somme yesterday. On the banks of the Whanganui River. We sat at an outside table and ate the most wonderful food. Cooked and presented with great care and sensational flavours. The staff were extremely accommodating. They were not hovering but were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. The menu is extensive and the food is so fresh. I shall definitely be back! Thanks!
Lovely decor, Really tasty food in fact the tastiest big breakfast I have had in a long time. Service not bad but seemed a little disorganized. Had some customers leave because of the wait for meals but ours came out without too long to wait. Well worth going again
Met up with friends for a late lunch. Greeted by the owner, who has an awesome sense of humour. Made us most welcome, while waiting for our friends. The wonderful lady whom served us also was wonderful & very gracious when taking our orders. The food was to die for & yummy. We all ordered a different meal, and was very enjoyable. A must try cafe/ resturant. Definitely will return. Thank you for the experience of excellent dining.
Unfortunately we had a very disappointing experience here, with the meals taking close to 3 hours and finally being delivered 10 minutes after closing time. The food wasn’t up to standard, with poorly chosen ingredients and seasoning, and many of us left hungry and tired. We were at least fairly well hydrated, with water being the only thing on the table - despite at one stage not a single staff member being visible, and having to refill the water carafe ourselves. There was also a highly limited selection of drinks with no local beers or wine list. It’s a shame, because the building itself was interesting and held much more promise than the experience itself. I am, however, happy to report that we had a nice waitress, who, albeit on her first day, did her best to serve us and was friendly and respectful. At least we managed to get a good laugh out of the situation, but do hope that it isn’t a regular occurrence at this eatery.
Great service. Fantastic food. Clean. Good ambience. Coming again...
Food was excellent when it finally arrived, didn't end up having full 6 courses as so long between courses, sat down to eat 7pm, left after just having 4 courses at 10.30pm. One great staff member, one staff member was totally so rude to our group that 4 members up and left. Never will return, as you NEVER EVER speak to customers as staff member did, totally disgusting . Will suggest formal complaint be made. Spoilt our wonderful night out. A----
