A unique and unusual place to stay. This heritage site has been transformed into a great little hostel. It was our first time staying in a hostel, so the bar is now set very high now. It exceeded our expectations. It has a great setup. The facilities are clean. Nice well equipped community kitchen with a nice tv lounge and dining area. Showers, toilets, and laundry facilities just off this area are clean and look very new. There is lots of outdoor space and games to play. A lovely, unexpected touch was the free pancakes on Sunday cooked by a very nice lady.nThe cell room we stayed in was clean and comfortable. There was more than enough room with a little table and stool to pop your things on. The bunk bed was comfortable, and there was an added bonus of a little heater. Bedding and towel were included, don't forget your toiletries!. Our cell block B had a toilet and shower on the same floor, plus an additional one at the bottom of the stairs.nThere are a few information boards around with some facts regarding the prison and prisoners, which is a nice touch.nThis is in a perfect location right next door to the Fremantle prison museum entrance, which is behind theniconic Freo markets. This is about a 10 -15 minute walk from the train station.nBe aware that you have to pay for parking which isn't cheap. We opted to take the train, which was convenient. There is also a big IGA across the road from the markets to get all yournessentials.nAll the staff we encountered were friendly.nI would definitely recommend staying here, if only like us, it was for 1 night to have the experience of staying in a heritage prison.
Lovely spacious hostel. Great amenities including two common rooms and well equipped kitchen. An incredibly unique location for a hostel…not all of us get to stay in prison cells!
One of the most unique experiences I have ever had in my life. I have stayed in YHA in other cities and Fremantle is top quality on everything. Beautiful people. Clean Rooms and Amenities Including Kitchen area. Close to Public Transport and The Port City of Historic Fremantle. A definite must if you’re looking for an affordable place to stay while in Western Australia Plus Free Pancakes on Sunday
Really nice Hostel within the old Prison, the rooms are the old prison cellsnnHelpfull employeesnnEnough Space to chill and relaxnnEasy meeting new peoplennStayed in a couple YHAs in Australia this one was one of the nicer onesnnOnly negative thing were some guests, which were loud and annoying at nighttime. Had girls in the room which kept making noises and switching lights at nighttime.
Interesting concept to stay in an old prison. The walls and yard are impressive, and there are signs depicting historic escape attempts in the corridor, but otherwise it’s not noticeably unique. We stayed in an ensuite room, which was rather disappointingly just a demountable metal building plonked in an jnternal yard. It had a very rattly aircon which was loud to run at bedtime. Maybe the upstairs shared bathroom rooms are better..? I didn’t see them. Fremantle is nice enough in the daytime, but has a dodgy desolate atmosphere after dark on weeknights.
