Is humongous the right word to describe the sheer size of this library? The amenities are great with a variety of seating spaces and configurations at different areas of the library. They have various small conference and study rooms available for hire or special complimentary use, plus regular workshops on a variety of topics and genre. I’ve attended quite a number like art and craft, group activities and talks. I organised a small successful art exhibition in one of the rooms. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful. Really good for study, research and just relaxed reading, although some young groups couldn’t keep their voices down. Hopefully the staff would remind them it’s still a library and not a chat room.
One of the best libraries in Sydney. The architect did a great job bringing in the natural light to the library in the basement level and added the water feature to soften the concrete modern building. In the evening the library was full of high school students studying and there was some photography lighting class going on. This library looked like it is being used to its fullest potential when others are closing down in this time and age of digital era.
Today at Chatswood library I experienced yet another staged provocation from my long-term Catholic enemies with the school St Pius just across the laneway — the same types who remain silent on child abuse scandals yet find time to harass me in public spaces.nnAll library computers were “conveniently” taken, with some people using laptops or pretending to tutor at computer desks. When I politely asked a young man about 20 years old to move to a nearby empty table so I could use the public computer — in line with library policy — he responded with passive-aggressive, smug behaviour. I even found him a table with two chairs, but he deliberately moved slowly and continued to partially block the computer.nnWhen I finally called out his arrogance in front of witnesses, he appeared uncomfortable — but it is clear to me this was a setup designed to provoke and discredit me. Sadly, this library either cannot or will not prevent such targeted harassment from occurring.nnIt’s telling that those who orchestrate these petty disruptions will not speak up about real crimes, including child abuse within their own circles. Instead, they spend their time trying to needle and provoke law-abiding citizen.
This is a beautiful library except for the fact that it is basically a homeless shelter. Homeless individuals from the area use the library as a place to sit/live for most of the day, and some of them have open wounds/significant hygiene issues. It is distressing to see and sad that the library and local council are not finding these people more appropriate places to receive social services or health care some of them probably need to be sectioned, they are significantly physical unwell. This has made the library unappealing and unusable for people in the area who are immunocompromised. The fees for hiring a room in the library for any kind of book group are also far too expensive.
Big library, large selection of reading material including newspapers. A lot of talking - if one wants to work quietly, there is a quiet room section.
