Took my family there the first time , it is a relatively large park with lots of spaces for kids to run around. Piblic transport is conveniently located on the out skirt of the park. On one end there's 3 giant slides where kids can spend unlimited time of, next to the slide is a flying fox. Public toilet is nearby, plus a few tables for pinic. We happened to visited the place during Easter event and it was packed with people. Highly recommended for a good day out i the weather is great. Do note that you do require slight fitness level to walk up hill on exit.
Western Park is one of the most peaceful and relaxing lush open spaces of 8 ha 20 acres in the Auckland city, right in the center of salubrious suburb Ponsonby. It was opened in 1871 and considered Auckland's oldest Municipal parkland. It is also one of the three oldest parks in Auckland city, the other two being the Auckland Domain and Albert Park. The park is enriched with verdant vegetation including beautiful established pūriri, tanekaha, karaka, rimu, pōhutukawa and Morton Bay fig trees in the park. There had been a stream running by the side of this land in ancient times which had been called Tuna-Mau by the local Māori, meaning 'the trapping of eels'. There is a playground, accessible toilets, fitness equipment, tennis courts, sports fields, drinking fountains, picnic tables and seating. The colourful playground will appeal to kids of all ages, which has two slides for racing, treehouses, swings, a seesaw, balancing features, small trampolines and a flying fox. The 25m slide is one of the highest and longest in Auckland. The lower-level play area features a wheelchair-friendly basket swing and spinning apparatus. The park is studded with sunken sculptures designed to represent historic Auckland buildings. They were created by famous Auckland sculptor John Radford resembling replicas of three building “ruins” and made of reinforced concrete. The sculptures are popular with climbing children and sets an unusual photo shoot backdrop. The one-kilometer Western Park Path loop around the park is a very popular short walk among the city dwellers.
Very cool playground nestled int he middle of Ponsonby, you wouldn’t notice it unless you walk down Western Park from Ponsonby road, but definitely worth taking a walk with you little one as this park has the coolest slides. It’s also got heaps of space for the kids to run around in. There isn’t a huge variety of equipment here, but a very fun place none the less.
One of our favourite places to walk the dogs & they love the slides… plus we just found out they have public tennis courts so that’s even better!
Very beautiful park with lots of plants variety, a playground, sport to do and benches!
Great rides for kids, very well maintained! Easy to spend 4-5 hours with kids.
Cool park, nice walk, heaps of shade. Toilets, water fountain, slides, swings, mini trampolines, flying fox, those ring a round the rosey thingys lol I think that's what it's called and seesaw. Field, court and a good place to walk dogs and alot of benches, picnic tables and seats to chill.
Pretty good park, has a dog area walking paths playgrounds toilets water fountains big wide grass aera kids loves it we had fish and chips and they played most of the afternoon. Will go back forsure nice and easy parking with in walking distance to the slides.
Plenty of parking. Slide has some sharp imperfections. Most kids had minor scratches and brooses. Overall nice place for gathering.
Great park for a morning walk with your dog. Lots of other friendly people and dogs in the community.
