Werrong Beach is definitely worth the walk there and back from the Coastal Track. The start of the track is easily accessed from Otford. The track passes through beautiful forest with occasional glimpses afforded of the ocean. The beach itself is spectacular, and there are lots of grassy areas to sunbathe on. Werrong is a legally designated nudist beach.
Despite the sign that says track closed, many people are still enjoying the delights of Werrong Beach. Now that the track has dried out, it is a relatively easy walk of about 30 minutes each way. The last bit down to the beach is somewhat steep and uneven but take your time and it's quite safe. Remember to take water, sunscreen and a towel. You needn't bother with a swimming cossie. There's shade up amongst the trees if it gets hot. The beach has recovered most of its sand again. The track itself is a journey in itself, to be enjoyed "au naturel'. Just watch out for the roots down at the beach and in the bush.
An absolutely sensational place! It is a secluded and very natural beach with beautiful grassy areas to sit and enjoy the pristine environment. It's at the southern end of the Royal National Park about one hour's drive south of Sydney. You access it via the Otford Lookout on Lady Wakehurst Drive. Go up the stairs on the left hand side of the lookout and walk along the track for a few hundred metres until you see the sign for Werrong Beach where the track branches off to the right. What you'll then experience is a quite steep and challenging pathway down through a lush rain forest that's really quite magical. You'll hear lots of birds and as you get closer to the beach, the sounds of the waves beckoning you. Someone has written in another review "Trust me, the hike is NOT HARD if you have even minimal fitness". This is incredibly misleading. It is DEFINITELY NOT an easy track to walk down and coming back up again is DEFINITELY A WORK-OUT. If you've done plenty of bush walking you won't have any trouble. If you've never bush walked before you are going to find it very challenging as it's very steep in places with lots of uneven ground and large steps over big tree roots and boulders. You'll really feel it in your legs going down and you'll certainly feel it all over going back up again. Allow 35-40 minutes each way 25-30 if you're pretty fit. Overall it's well worthwhile and it's a legal clothing optional beach too so you don't need to take a swimming costume with you. Having mentioned swimming though, the beach is also quite challenging with rips and waves coming at all different angles. Do not dive in head first either as there are submerged rocks. At the time of writing this review late July 2020 much of the sand has gone due to the big seas we've had recently, but it will come back again. You need to bring water and food and please ensure you take your rubbish away with you. Most kids will be fine as long as you keep them well managed but the pathway down is no good for very little children.
Best beach in Sydney sure by nature beautiful green trees and the ocean is all u see feels like I'm in Thailand..
After parking your car make your way to the start of the track which by the signage indicating the start of the coast track. keep your eyes on the right hand side of the track as the sign and start of the Werrong beach track is for some reason located off the track in the bushes. The trek down in my opinion wasn't that bad. It's just like any other bushwalk. The usual walking over occasional boulders, tree roots, slipping in the mud etc.Take your time. It probably took me something like half an hour or less to walk down to the beach. The walk down is beautiful, you're submerged in the rainforest, birds are singing, you can glimpse the ocean over the canopy in some parts of the track, and a short section of the track follows the river. It's truly a lovely walk. And the beach itself. Just wow. I can't believe I have never been here before. It's a really beautiful beautiful beach. Reminded me a little of one of the beaches on Lord Howe Island. As for the beach itself, there isn't much sand. Pebbles cover most of the beach. You'd be better off setting yourself up on the grassy knoll just above the beach. As someone else here has said- do not dive into the water. Wade out slowly. There are many half submerged and submerged boulders in the water. The water is prone to currents and rips so I only went in waist deep. Truly a stunning beach and hike. Would 100% recommend to anyone
Around two hours there and back. The walk gets quite steep but there's plenty of shade. Beach is not big but there's a few spots for a picnic.
Beautiful beach but very difficult to get to and even more so to get back from. Track is very rough and is both a very steep slope and perched on a narrow ledge with a steep drop on one side. It would be extremely dangerous after wet weather. The state of the 'path' at the beach end where wave action has eroded it is scandalous.
Amazing beach!!! Loved it!! Quite a trek down and back up but so worth it.
Warning: It is a nudist beach and I wish it had been clearly indicated somewhere along the way. It's a good work out down and back up. We did a 1 hour bushwalk before heading there so it wasn't easy but if you're fit it's fine. Unfortunately I was looking forward to a picnic with my wife but once we got there we realized it is a nudist beach and wasn't comfortable eating there. Nice spot but wouldn't miss anything special if you don't go.
AVOID Werong Beach! It’s a Hell Hole, and they warn you at the beginning of the trail. The sign at the beginning of the trail should say “Wrong Beach”, as in you’re at the wrong beach, turn back and go to another beach. The 30-45 minute trek down to the beach from the car park is steep and dangerous, it’s worse on your way back up and I would NOT recommend this beach to anyone under the age of 50 unless you’re in perfect shape and conditioning. The long, precarious walk down brings you to a small stony beach with massive rip tides, so if you can’t really swim there, and it’s nothing to look at, what’s the point of actually going there? As soon as we arrived at this sad excuse for a beach we wished we had turned back at the very beginning and gone to Bronte Beach or one of the nicer beaches closer to Sydney. 4 thumbs down!
