We love venturing to new places for a meal and always count our blessings when it turns out to be an outstanding experience. This is exactly the case with our visit to the Italian restaurant, Via Alta in the village shopping precinct in Willoughby. With their Italian wait staff and authentic dishes, the restaurant makes you feel as though you are holidaying in Italy, which is a great consolation, considering overseas travel is virtually impossible at the moment. Our dining experience at this restaurant was perfect in every way, their service was excellent, the atmosphere was cosy and the food was superb. Our blog aims give you a literary taste for what this restaurant is offering and hopefully will give you an impetus to make a booking and try the restaurant out for yourself. The meals here are quite rustic and very flavoursome. Not only this, the meals are extremely generous servings. We shared a range of the menu and enjoyed everything that we sampled. There is also a tasting menu if that is something you’d prefer and leave the ordering to the staff. To start with was the creamy burrata, which was a light starter with a lovely freshness, seved with orange and grapefruit segments and a bitter leaves sauce that was well seasoned with a unique flavour we very much enjoyed. The little things that this restaurant does really makes it stand out. For instance, their Zucco Arrosto salad is an absolute winner, for the roast pumpkin, baby spinach, thin ricotta slices and toasted almonds demonstrates how each ingredient carefully considered can make the plate pop with texture and taste. We really liked that the pumpkin was served warm, this took this salad to another level, as did the and the crunch and roasted flavour of the toasted almonds. I had a glass of Prosecco with the entree which matched perfectly, and Via Alta have a good drinks list with wine, beer and cocktails. The wild boar parpadelle was a stunning rustic dish and a standout of the dining experience and the meals we’ve had in 2020. The fresh house made pasta was perfect in every way and served aldente, tossed with the wild boar ragout, which was beatifully rich and served with Parmesan cheese. It was certainly a very big potion too. The Gamberi grilled king prawns, tomato broth and garlic bruschetta was our other main, and equally tasty in different ways. This seafood dish is full of tomato sauce and the cherry tomatoes themselves. We loved that this was served on a piece of bread soaking up all of the luscious sauce. The flavour of the prawns stood out and they were in abundance. You know it’s almost a rite of passage to have dessert at an Italian restaurant. Whilst we ordinarily go for a cannoli, we opted for a tiramisu on this visit since it sounded amazing, and it was. Layers of sponge cake doused in coffee and liquor with marscapone cream and sprinkled with powdered chocolate makes for the perfect end to the meal. We left here feeling completely satisfied with our meal and we look forward to returning for their truffle menu items in July and August.
Highly recommend the tagliolini and tiramisu. The fish of the day lacked flavour and was average. The busiate was good. The burrata is sweet which was interesting. Their sourdough with EVOO was really good and fresh not pictured Nice local vibes
Nice restaurant with friendly staff. The food is great. We had a tapas style degustation of 8 dishes. The tiramisu was a little dry, but the rest were very good. The only other blemish is that they charge you $5 for sparkling mineral water from the tap which is fine, but we got a top up bottle that we didn’t ask for and weren’t told that it would cost us extra.
We went to via alta for valentine day dinner. The overall food was good. However the entree was the worst course of the dinner. A simple bread with mortazella and ham sprinkle with vinegar. It wasn't tasty at all. As every part of the entree was cold this. The main and dessert was really good, especially for the pasta and the fish. The fish was cooked well. When we ate it, it was moist and glistening. The skin was cruncy. The dessert was also not overpowering with sweetness, though it was simple it was yummy to eat. We got a lemon ricotta with chocolate ganache for dessert. Would we come back here? We definitely will, for their pasta
Hadn't been to Via Alta for a long while so we wanted to see if it was still as good as we remembered. The atmosphere was lively and the service was friendly and attentive, sometimes too attentive, as I asked the waiter to give us some time to read the wine list but he stood by the table instead waiting for us to decide which made us feel pressured. He also came to our table to clear plates away before we had all finished eating, which is quite unnecessary and very irritating. The bruschetta starter was excellent and we had the sourdough bread as well, also very good, but why they charged us for 1.5 portions of sourdough when we only ordered one I have no idea. Biggest disappointment were the mains. Two of us chose the special, which was a cavatelli pasta with lamb ragout. Very bland and tasted like something you'd buy from a supermarket and heat in a microwave. The lobster tagliatelle was a little better, but not much, with very little lobster if indeed it was lobster, it was impossible to tell. At $35 and $38 respectively they were certainly not very good value. The bill came to $232 for three people, not outrageous perhaps, but very poor value given the quality of most of the food. We won't be coming back.
We were thinking pizza for dinner but ended up having a refined Italian meal! The 6 course set menu at $65 per person is pretty good value. The homemade tiramisu is delicious!!
Easy going and chilled evening out, rustic Italian food, wld hav love my wild boar ragout to be a bit tighter less liquid but tasted good! Trout with capers and tomatoes was interesting! Yummy tiramisu to finish off!

Ive been to the place with my French partner, i am korean. For me, it was bit salty and oily bue he found its all perfect. He gave 5 and i did 4.5 We had 6 course meals, all homemade and wellmade dishes. It was bit too quiet in the beginning, so i thing some nice music could support the awkward silent better. Serving was bit fast, so ask them to give one by one slowly. $15 glass wine was bit too expensive but good flavour, so cant complain. All gentleman were serving nicely. Thanks.
Great authentic Italian restaurant with traditional regional dishes that are delicious. Great Italian wines on the list. Staff is Italian which makes the whole experience even more authentic. Overall, it's a nice little gem in Willoughby
