The right place mainly for students or workers to linger. Cozy and close to the shopping centers or restaurant, and tram station. The famed Queen Victoria Market is just a stone’s throw away.
I stay in a ‘superior single’ hostel room on level 2 for girls in Unilodge on A’Beckett and I adore my room! It’s quite spacious for a single person and the carpeted floors make it easy for up-keep. The large windows in my room overlook the classy high-rises on Elizabeth street and allow for plenty of natural sunlight to seep into the room. Living in the hostel area is a very unique experience as it allows you to have your own personal space, whilst also providing you with a communal experience as the kitchenette, showers and toilets are shared spaces. Not to mention, there are designated communal spaces such as the common area and study rooms on the ground floor. The amenities provided by Unilodge are sufficient, however, there is considerable room for improvement with regard to maintenance of the shared spaces in the hostels. This can be done by installing a functioning exhaust fan in the kitchenette on level 2 and following up on cleanliness of the toilets and showers on a daily basis. The location of Unilodge on A’Beckett street is prime allowing for extremely good connections via trams, trains and buses, not to mention grocery stores and several restaurants. You will be a 5 minute walk away from Melbourne Central; a major shopping mall and also one of the main train stations in Melbourne. You will also be a free tram ride away from Flinders Street station, which is another major train station connecting all the train lines in Melbourne. Truth be told, nothing beats the location of this Unilodge in conjunction with the prices of renting the rooms. As a Residential Advisor in Unilodge, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a friendly and enthusiastic team of individuals under the guidance of our management staff Ash, Ken and Kanav. It’s always fun to get together with the others RAs to create events for our wonderful tenants on a monthly basis. It’s a pleasurable and rewarding experience building a warm and friendly community within Unilodge. Check out some pictures below views from my window and of A’Beckett street and definitely consider Unilodge on A’Beckett for your accommodation needs :
It is arguably one of my best decision i've made when i choose to stayed in Unilodge at A'Beckett. At first i was skeptic just like every other people, but it turns out to be one of my treasured moments meeting a lot of people from different backgrounds/studies. The staff are very cooperative to and the cleaning service is operating everyday. The place is also very strategic near shopping centers like Melbourne Central or QV and close to Flagstaf Garden.Overall, i'm glad i went to Unilodge. The price was reasonable/not that expensive i was one of the lucky ones to get a pretty good dealand the quality is very good. I really recommend this place for any other student that is looking for a place to stay.
The room was very dirty when I arrived. Very small shared kitchen, shared bathrooms always needing maintenance, carpet floors, most of rooms with only indoor window, thin walls, very noisy since 5am due the constructions on the street. Lift use not allowed for the rooms. Visitors not allowed due the pandemic. 2 shared fridges for the whole floor and 1 freezer that is always full. Fridges inside the rooms are not allowed. Very poor wi-fi signal. $4 for the only laundry machine that also needs maintenance, $4 for the only dryer.
Nice place to stay for the first year especially for students who looking for cheap accommodation. Has unlimited internet, all price included. Has a "party" sometime, so you guys can get free food and also you will have new friends. Unfortunately most of the renters is not responsible with the place such as toilet, shower, and kitchen. And almost every night there will be a false alarm. And because i was used to it, if there's a false alarm at night, i won't waste my time to go down.
BAD experience staying here, I've chose to live in the apartment here because of its rather cheap price and big space. However the first thing that 'welcomed' me was a strong smell of paint, which makes unable to move in for the first week. I have to stay in a hotel and paid a steep price. When I complained this to the staff, their attitude was like it's my problem, I should be the one to fix it. The second thing is about the network. Although it's unlimited and fast as it claimed but it's not suitable for online gaming especially for first person shooter games, and it's still bad even after I paid extra 20 dollars for a broader bandwidth. It's is very unstable and high peek of ping frequently occurs. That's so much for my first two weeks, actually it can be seen as my first week in unilodge cuz I spent my first week wondering around different hotels. Now I have a whole year to go... Thanks for your reply. The smell is getting better. Nevertheless, it still took a month to dissipate since my accommodation. Other than that, the wifi experience is pretty unsatisfying. The wifi itself is very unstable, the speed freqently dropped to just a few KBs. Hope there would be some improvements in the future : After 2 years, I'm now getting a water bill collection from the date that I moved. Looks like the place still haunts me... It said that I owe AU$79.66 for three month worth of water. I compare it to the other property that I lived after I moved out, I got about AU$35 three months charge with the same water company, with two people living in the property. I don't know why is my water bill at Unilodge was soooo expensive, it all around AU$70+ for a single person per three month and I barely used waters???? I had paid all those expensive bill as it was my first time in Australia paying utility bills and had no prior experience or any references to warn me that the price was not normal. As I talked to the staff from City West water today and they told me that my water bills from Unilodge were all estimated due to inaccessibility, so I had to pay steep water prices for the whole year during my stay in Unilodge! You never consider upgrade your water meter for students' sake, what a shame on you!!
It's a nice place to stay for the first year. I like Unilodge, but what I don't like are the state agents who go blindly, not willing to help and their attitude caused me great disappointment. I thought they would kindly help me with the bond but it turned into a real hassle.
The location is really convince for everything. 5 minutes to Melbourne central station train or tram, shopping, food or entertainment, 5 minutes to Victoria market and many Asian markets nearby. It's a economic accommodation for students. However, the location is near center of the city, if you prefer to live in a quite place, the urban city apartment might not comfortable as your expected.
Very bad experience staying here. Staff are very inconsiderate. I don't even know why they work there. My light and shelf in the room were broken since the day I moved in and it was never fixed till the day I moved out. I would always get answers like we will look into it but no action was taken. The kitchen was always filthy and other than an oven nothing else like stoves etc were provided which made life even harder. The kitchen door was broken too and this means it is easier for the smoke from the kitchen to go out and trigger the smoke alarm which means how ever was unlucky had to pay minimum of 3000 dollars as a fine. Overall just a bad experience and wouldn't recommend anyone to stay here. There are many better options for university students.
Review effective as at 12/03/2019, for non-studio apartment only -non-studio hostel's shared areas often ruined by some of its own tenants kitchen, bathroom, laundry. -noise may occur outside the premises depending on the room location you got, which you might want to contact the Melb authorities rather than your premises manager. -Noise WITHIN are the worst in shared dorm most tenants doesn't really hold much to considerations for others. -room walls are thin, can be quite mentally challenging for studying environment. -security are fob-protected, losing the key can be costly. -bond anchoring, rent must be paid as signed contract until term ends. -non-studio kitchen area is where I leave the rest of the critics to Gordon Ramsay. +Very flexible location main spotlight +Unlimited wifi, though horribly managed when the internet starts loading really slowly or wouldn't load properly. +premises cleanliness actively maintained +great desk reception service, responsive to open recommendation for improvement +community events available for all residents to meet up and have fun Optional preparations for non-studio room tenants: Getting your own bar fridge, ricecooker/cooking pan/electronic portable stove. 2/5, not for lone-living, only pick this spot if you're planning for room sharing
