They provide towels. Not sure I've come across a backpackers with that service before. And the owner (and/or manager) is an interesting, friendly character. Otherwise a very no frills hostel, aside from an eclectic bookshelf. But if you're hanging around near your bed next to Brunswick St too long then you're not doing Melbourne right, frankly. Nearby Uptown Jazz Cafe recommended, if you're into that sort of thing, despite varying quality of entertainment.

I think the hostel may be nice provided you don't do anything to aggravate the temperamental owner. I made a booking that had to be changed (as bookings sometimes are by nature) due to entirely unforeseen circumstances. Who can say that plans don't sometimes change? I also didn't foresee the adverse, unfair and aggravated reaction this would result in. We needed to reduce the stay (which we may have decided to go ahead with) which resulted in the owner increasing the nightly price to what I had been told. That would be fine had I been correctly informed. He told me that we were given a weekly stay discount, and then when we arrived we were told it was actually a fortnightly discount. Either he changed his mind or didn't correctly inform me over the phone. Now, while I understand that the change to the owners was annoying given the circumstances, I'm positive that the response 'either keep your booking or get out' wasn't warranted and can hardly compare to the nuisance it caused myself. When I offered to reduce the stay his response (despite him knowing we had A LOT of luggage) was simply no, stay longer or leave. How can that be considered an appropriate response? Thank-fully he gave a refund of the bond... after a heated argument. I don't care how much it annoyed him it's not good practice to kick out customers who have caused nothing more than a nuisance and to corner them into either paying for a stay they don't need or leave; which by the way was after business hours meaning making arrangements was risky. We might have had no-where to go if another place had no rooms available. A very real possibility in late November. I don't claim what we had to ask wasn't an issue for him but nevertheless the hostel owner responded to this issue terribly. I have to give it a 1-star rating because the only experience I had the chance to gage the quality of the hostel over was over a massive issue that SHOULD have been resolved peacefully. Any other business would not yell at you, and would offer a simple alternative. I expect him to respond in defence but it's incontrovertible that he dealt with a simple issue extremely unprofessionally.

Great place to crash after a big ol' flight across an ocean. Cheap, well run, and clean. If I'd had more energy I'd have hung out with all the folks in the indoor/outdoor gathering room. Little and easy to miss if you don't look at all the doors around. Slept well.
