Wow, I visited Tokyo Gardens in Dunedin with friends tonight and enjoyed an amazing tepanyaki experience with the new chef. Was Absolutely Delicious food, very filling! Also great value for money.
Had I seen the reviews to this restaurant I may have not gone. Therefore, I am glad that I did not read them before hand. We tried the Teppan Pork and the Chicken Bento Box. The bento box comes with miso soup. It was a very generous portion as it was very filling and delicious, the chicken was full of flavor. The miso soup was one of the best I have ever had. I amnoy sure if it was due to the chili oil I added but could have certainly had more. My husband had the Teppan Pork and really enjoyed it. It was just the right amount of food.
This place is interesting. Today we went to a Japanese restaurant, and other than the cloth piece tied to the head, nothing was Japanese. The food was served in plastic 'don' donburi, which had black smut on it. I was expecting some sophisticated Japanese ceramic or bamboo! Alright, I went with lovely people, so I can just forget about the dollars I spent. And food was not fresh and tasted so bad.
Absolutely appaling service, sat down at 7.30pm and was still waiting for our correct meal at 9.00pm. Was bought out the wrong orders multiple times and by the time the final meals came out the first meals had been finished. The chef made an amazing meal though so no complaints there. A discount was applied to the bill but did not make up for the lack of competent service, and depressing atmosphere due to the number of customers and delivery drivers having their orders taken incorrectl. Definitely avoid this place unless you enjoy micromanaging your own order. The sake is pretty good however. Dietary restrictions: Asked for small amount of sauce due to allergies, meal was swimming in sauce.
We ordered takeaways tonight. One chicken dish costing $ 17.50 which had about 6 small bits of chicken, a little rice and small portion of coleslaw. A total rip off. The service was also slow even though there were not many people dining. Would not recommend!!!!
I would not recommend this place at all. When we walked in it smelt which was a sign we should have left. Only one staff member on, was ok but not overly friendly. I ask for no rice with my poke bowel and the bowel had the most measly portion of salmon and salad to the point I said “is this it” - to which he replied it’s the costs of food at the moment. A tablespoon of salmon and some mango from a tin don’t cut it for the same price as jizzo which is amazing. The toilets were grotty, the place is dark and tired .. won’t return.
Been a long time since we had been here. The place seemed a bit tired and in need of a clean. The food was good. Not great, just good. We felt sorry for the one staff member having to do it all from food to serving to phones.. would we be back? Maybe.Food: 3/5
I ordered an Udon from here for a takeaway and it was literally a bowl of grease. Couldn’t even touch it, let alone eat it. This is not authentic Japanese cooking. Unless you like your food heart attack heavy, I would give this place a miss. I hope it improves, but won’t be eating there again.
Disappointed does not begin to describe our experience dining at Tokyo Garden in the weekend and we will definitely not be returning. In any other circumstance we would have left, but there's not much you can do when you've booked for an end-of-year group dinner. We seated ourselves as there was no staff to greet us, and waited one hour until the cooking began. The one waiter working was also prepping our food in the kitchen, while the owner who would end up cooking for us sat on his phone. The waiter had a poor attitude and was generally rude the whole night, but you can't blame the guy when he was covering the whole restaurant on his own on, doing the jobs of multiple people. During our hour of waiting we watched old grease from the rangehood above the Teppanyaki hot plate continuously drip down onto the cooking surface - which was not cleaned off properly and instead simply smeared across the burning hot plate with a synthetic cloth which filled the room with smoke. It was obvious proper cleaning of the rangehood had not been done in a long time, as we could see it was covered in black tar-like substance and grease. I can't imagine how poor the level of cleanliness is behind the scenes when what we could see with our own eyes was so disgusting. This grease from the rangehood continued to drip onto food cooking on the hot plate as the dinner progressed. We have had multiple great experiences with the previous chef and have come to know the Teppanyaki experience inside and out as we kept returning to see his great skills and humour, but were disappointed to see that the restaurant owner, who clearly did not have the skillset to be doing Teppanyaki, would be cooking for both large bookings our table and another across from us as they were understaffed. It was extremely inappropriate for the owner disclose the previous chef's private, personal family matters to a bunch of restaurant guests as an excuse for why his chef was not here and he himself would be cooking tonight. The owner had no chef's hat on, and was continuously sweating - we were quite concerned about hygiene and food safety the whole night. All the meat and seafood we had ordered chicken, beef, squid, prawns, fish sat raw and uncovered out of the fridge in the hot room right by the hot plate for hours. Definitely some sort of violation of food safety occurring there. Although, any bacteria was probably killed off as the "chef" proceeded to burn most of our food, while somehow still leaving pieces of chicken raw and red. One of our party members has a food allergy to garlic, and the chef assured us that catering to this would be easy as he would cook one portion separately without using garlic a key ingredient in the meal. He then proceeded to omit garlic from all the courses in *everyone's* meal, rather than just cooking a separate portion as the old chef had done in the past. We ended up eating bland, burned food with no flavour the whole night - it was clear that the owner does not have experience cooking. Not only the quality but also the quantity of food had drastically decreased from when we had visited just a couple of months ago. The group across from us was about 2/3 of our party size, and the amount of vegetables, eggs, rice etc. that they were receiving was pretty much the same as ours. Never before had we left Teppanyaki without feeling we would burst at the seams from generous portions, however that night the amounts of some courses were less than half of what we had in the past. It was also odd that there were leftover portions of chicken and beef left uncooked in their prep containers - considering many of our party were left hungry it doesn't seem unlikely that they had skimped on our portions. Overall the level of hygiene/food safety, quality of food, and attitudes of staff at Tokyo Garden were shocking and we will not be returning. Don't eat here unless you want to wait an hour to eat a tiny portion of seafood that's been sitting for hours in a hot room cooked in grease that's dripping from the ceiling. Dietary restrictions: Very poorly accommodated.
Went here for a meal with our group a few nights ago,The service from the young person who greeted us was appalling and this was attitude the whole night so Rude.We also had booking for 7-30 and was still waiting at 8-45 to start cooking and some of the things the cook was going on about was un except-able but it didn't bother him at all. The food was nice but if was a real Japanese chef he would of beed very disappointed in this so called effort of Teppanyaki. would never go back..The Toilets were disgusting had not been cleaned in a long time...
