Our family is equipped to give complete, confidential advice for all matters relating to the Funeral service, before, during and after the time of bereavement.
John Thomson first started in Funeral directing at the end of the 1st World War after his return from active service in 1918 when he took employment with T. Odgers & Co as a then, Cabinet Maker and Undertaker.
In 1950 John found that Castlemaine and The Surrounding District had a need for new and modern ideas and decided to open his own premises at 12 Mostyn St, The 1st Thompson Funeral Parlor in Castlemaine. John and his wife Annie then continued their business until 1967 when retirement was due and this is when Edwin Thompson and His Wife Patsy took over the business.
In 1980 Edwin and Patsy opened their new Chapel at 123 Mostyn St, Castlemaine. After moving into the new spacious parlor, built and designed by Edwin, the Thompson family were able to purchase the Trades Hall, next door, having a place for after funeral catering.
Edwin and Patsy’s son Peter has always had a keen interest in following his parents footsteps and entered the business in 1980 after his schooling here in Castlemaine. Since Edwin passed away in 1992 his son Peter has managed the Family business along with his Mother Patsy.
The Thompson family pride themselves as people who offer comfort, care and organization in a time of grief, but who also help to celebrate the life of the loved one lost, having always believed strongly that at a time of bereavement in a family, that people maintain their choice of selecting their own Funeral Director regardless of the circumstances at the time.
Funerals have changed over these many years of service. So there have obviously been many major changes since the Thompson Family first started conducting funerals.
When Peter first started conducting funerals they were not what they are today. All Staff encourage an individual celebration of life, it is a personal choice of respect and coping with the individual family needs when a family loses a loved one.
The Thompson family over many years have had a very important role in the community and it is one they place much pride in and will continue for many years to come.
