Fisher Library at USYD is an exceptional place to study. As one of the most iconic libraries on campus, it offers a variety of study spaces to suit different needs. Whether you prefer a quiet study room, a private study booth, or a group discussion room, Fisher has it all. The upper floors provide stunning views of Sydney, adding a touch of tranquility to your study sessions. It's the perfect environment for focused and productive work. Highly recommended for any USYD STUDENT looking for a great study spot at the University of Sydney!
As a current student, level 2 at Fisher Library has been my favourite study area on campus so far. But I’ve consistently felt that the short female security guard stationed there has been unnecessarily rude. I’ve let it go in the past, understanding that it’s her job to control access to the building. However, what I experienced on the morning of April 30th, 2025, around 8:45 am, crossed the line—it felt blatantly discriminatory and deeply upsetting.nnThat morning, it was absolutely pouring. Like everyone else, I had an umbrella, and I used the umbrella dryer provided. As I was drying mine, I saw a Caucasian woman walk in without even attempting to dry hers. I didn’t care at first—it’s not my place to enforce rules. But what happened next made it very clear that something unfair was happening.nnAs I walked in after drying my umbrella, the security guard abruptly told me, “Dry your umbrella,” with zero politeness or professionalism. I calmly explained that I already had, but she completely ignored me and repeated, “Dry your umbrella or you can’t come in.” I then pointed out the clear trail of water left by the Caucasian woman who had entered just moments earlier without being stopped, and asked why she hadn’t said anything to her. Again, she didn’t even acknowledge what I said.nnI understand that she may be trying to do her job—but if that’s the case, then she should be asking everyone who enters, not selectively enforcing the rules based on someone’s race. That is simply wrong. Treating people differently based on their background is unacceptable and has no place on a university campus.nnAfter that interaction, I had to dry my umbrella again before being allowed in. A few seconds later, another Asian student walked in, and she said the same thing to him—despite him clearly stating that he had already dried his umbrella.nnI’ve lived in Sydney my entire life and experienced all kinds of discrimination—but this was the first time I’ve been subjected to such overt racial bias by someone misusing her position of authority on a university campus. It was humiliating, infuriating, and completely unacceptable. The incident left me feeling angry and upset for the rest of the day. It’s extremely disheartening to know that even in a place of higher learning, some people still choose to act in a racially biased way.nnThis wasn’t even the first time I witnessed her being unnecessarily aggressive. During the exam period winter 2024, I once came to study with my boyfriend, who had forgotten his student card since it was during stuvac. He tried to show his Canvas dashboard as proof, but she became irritated and snapped at him for taking too long. It was clear that he was just waiting for the university Wi-Fi to load—something entirely out of his control. Yet she still treated him as if he were deliberately wasting her time. It was rude, uncalled for, and just reinforced how unpleasant she makes the experience of simply entering the library.
It's a wonderful place for studying. During final exam, you can enjoy free breakfast, lunch, and dinner outside of the library, but you need to occupied some space in the morning. It will be too late to get a table for studying.
Really good for students who would study the whole night, especially when the final exam is due. In the dawn, cleaners will vacuum the whole library floor by floor, making it really noisy. It do made the place clean as the toilet must be cleaned otherwise there are toilet paper thrown everywhere. The library is connected to new law building underground, more study places are available there with rather less crowded.
An atmosphere that inspires studying.nThe simple cooking and dining area was practical and convenient. Foods suitable for microwave cooking were also available from the vending machine.
