It was Tuesday just before lunchtime and we felt like BBQ. There isn't much open in Melbourne on a Tuesday lunchtime so we drove all the way out to Thomastown to try out The Smoke Pit for the first time.nnObviously, the place was a bit quiet but that just meant the staff were a bit more attentive and the wait was shorter. The restaurant had a fun southern USA theme that worked well. The menu was pretty hard to choose from so we picked the platter for two to try as much as possible.nnNormally the brisket is disappointing but it is the true test of Texas style BBQ. I was pleasantly surprised but how fatty and moist the brisket was. Well done, team. The chips were wildly good, crispy on the outside and creamy in the middle. And I don't even normally eat the chips! The chicken and sausage weren't up to the level of the brisket but were still ok. The pulled pork wasn't great - dry and not pulled, so we left it behind. Next time I will try the pulled lamb. The salads and Mac-n-cheese bites extra were spot on.nnAll up, with a big pint of Stella, we had a great meal. Well worth the drive across the vast plains of Melbourne.
This was the worst American BBQ I’ve ever had, wings tasted awful like poor quality chicken and too salty/overseasoned, Mac n cheese was initially a soup and then over the course of dinner thickened and had a clumpy/powdery texture, the Texas cowboy beans lacked flavor and the tortilla chips were not well cooked- crispy some parts and undercooked in other parts, the southern fried chicken burger was chicken schnitzel in a burger, nothing like a southern fried chicken, the corn on the cob had no seasoning or flavor, tasted boiled then slightly charred for colour, the Jalapeno cheese sausage had no flavor and just tasted like it was deep fried, even the Coke Zero tasted like syrup and was flat. Best brisket was good, the only decent dish that came out. Very disappointing and definitely not good value for money.
This really is a feast so go hungry. The brisket was so tender, the pork belly burnt ends were deliciously crispy. Mac n cheese so creamy and cheesy and the pulled pork was amazing. I'm not a chicken wings girl but these changed my mind.nAll so delicious and at an affordable price of only $50 pp, it's a fantastic deal. If you're still craving, just ask for more. These pictures are the all you can eat trays that you start with.
First time having smoked ribs. Flavour was phenomenal, but some pieces were a bit dry. I general, flavours were great for everything we tried BBQ wings, spicy wings, chips, ribs & salad, but the meats weren't as juicy as we would've liked.nnAmenities were very clean, staff were friendly and time waiting for food was minimal.nnWould highly recommend the slaw salad as a side. It was perfect for washing the palate in between mouthfuls of the tasty meats.nnThe kids are already asking to come back again, especially so they can get more of the spicy sauce we bought for home
The place is nice, I must say that I went on Sunday at 3 pm and we were the only table so the order was fast, as for the service, it is good but the waiter needs a little more charisma. Let's talk about the food: we ordered a tray for two people, the price, 80 Aud, is acceptable since it is abundant, my favorite was the brisket, although a little salty the edges, the external seasoning in general good flavor, the pulling pork had good flavor but a little cold, maybe serving it with the bbq sauce a little warmer would improve it, the jalapeño sausage disappointed me, it was a little spicy but it lacked a lot of flavor, the fries are good, the coleslaw lacks flavor, they should season it with some Texas dressing recipe, the wings were delicious. They serve it with 3 sauces, a spicy and chili, which is good, and a BBQ, which is good. Maybe the balance of acid and sweet could be improved a bit, but overall it's fine. The one that disappointed me was a mustard-based sauce, it had a lot of vinegar flavor and was totally unbalanced. It could be better if they balanced the flavors. Overall the place is nice, ideal for a night with friends, meat and beer. I recommend it.
