Great location, Great food and reasonably priced. The atmosphere was relaxing and inviting. Bob owns the place and spent time with us having a chat before and after the meal. He was such a lovely down to earth guy with a love of cooking and cars. Highly recommend eating at the Old Ghan Restaurant. Make sure you call up and book. We were fortunate to be able to try some freshly baked Quondong & Apple Pie with that really delicious old school traditional style pastry, which reminded me of when my gran used to make deserts growing up We were so full after the meal, we had to take away the desert, so no ice cream, but it was worth it. Highly recommend eating at the Old Ghan Restaurant with time to watch the sun setting out the front of the restaurant across the road.
Had a sirlion steak meal that was "A" grade, only complaint possible is it could have been smaller as I struggled to finish it. Our host and the waitress were exceptionally friendly and efficient which made our visit even more enjoyable.
We had a very enjoyable night here when we visited recently. Straight away, we were captivated by the wonderful restored building previously the railway station and the amazing collection of car badges as you enter. We were greeted warmly by Bob, the owner and chef. We enjoyed a delicious three course menu, all skilfully prepared and cooked by our host, each of which were delicious. The serves were generous and well presented. It was a quiet night when we were there and Bob took plenty of time to chat to us and make us feel so welcome. The other staff were equally as friendly, attentive and helpful. We highly recommend the Old Ghan Restaurant if you are ever in Hawker. Also loved the phone call the next day after Port Adelaide beat the Swans!
Well we found Bob to be a really engaging host. He manages a great dining atmosphere lovely food restaurant and he allowed us to have drinks in the old station masters office as well as providing historic information about the location and the hundreds of trains that came through this area during the war years. Good on Bob for keeping this place going and sustaining our history.
Absolutely brilliant dining ecperience in every respect!! went there tonight with my wife, ordered tempura chicken as a shared entree, fillet steak and pork schnitzel for mains snd a bottle of Inigo Shiraz from Seven Hill Winery at Clare. Very reasonably priced, excellent food, and big serves of quality food. The owner Bob was a real card, very entertaining and and excellent host who is proud of his restaurant. Enjoyed it so much we will be going back again before we leave Hawker.
Don’t be put off that this place is on the edge of town, it is amazing! Seemed VERY popular with the locals which is always a good sign so ring ahead to book to be sure! The owner/chef Bob greets you on arrival and is super helpful and makes all the food himself, which is delicious. The schnitzels are soft and tender, the curries fragrant and melt in your mouth, and the lasagna is a hit. Can’t recommend highly enough, the food is too notch
Great dinner, sat outside with our dog and enjoyed a very pleasant evening. Bob was an interesting fellow who added to the whole experience. Would definitely go again. Parking: Heaps of parking available around the old railway station.
A wonderful old building to see and great that it's being used as a restaurant. A group of five of us ate there on the weekend. Wine was well priced and pretty good. But Bob the owner and waiter was gruff, bordering on rude. A minor change to a meal while he was still taking orders at our table was met with "...well I've already asked you that" and "I cant make up your mind for you". The pasta sauce tasted like it came out of a jar and all our meals were served warm to cold - out of a microwave oven. A cold and hard lamb shanks aren't pleasant. If you're game enough to eat here, stick to steak or schnitzels.
Great to be in the old railway station, building is full of character. Great wine from Sevenhill at reasonable prices perhaps just go there for a drink?. Most food appeared to be reheated and not hot enough. It's probably safest to stick with steak and schnitzels. Host is abrupt and unfriendly!
This is a must to dine in. Owner is so friendly. And the food is amazing. Best snitzel.Food: 5/5
