We became a fan of Andrew Birse’s cooking when he worked at Malt Dining many years ago. We have been following him after he left Malt. When I learned he is the new head chef at the Long Apron, I made a booking immediately. The whole dining experience exceeded my high expectation. Food was amazing, pairing of various vegetables with different protein was genius. I loved every single dish but really liked the chicken tortellini and the duck. The onion broth is phenomenal. The restaurant decor feels high end and classy. Service was attentive, there were many front house staffs and they were all professional. The wine pairing was good and the wine list is impressive. In my opinion, it’s worth driving over an hour to Montville for this amazing dinner. Thank you Andrew and his team. I will definitely come back.
Overall was a great dining experience! Staff were really quite attentive though did drop the ball with a gluten free dietary requirement when delivering dessert - quickly rectified and they were apologetic. Cocktail in the garden before dinner was really nice, and a great setting for a pre-dinner drink. My wife and I had the 5 Course Tasting Menu, with matching wines for one. Two of the five dishes were absolutely stellar and well worth the money fish & beef - possibly one of the best beef dishes I have ever had, one was good opera gateau, and two I did not enjoy at all vichyssoise & scallop. Scallop itself was presented raw in thin strips, and lacked flavour, and the tomato portion of the dish was underwhelming. The vichyssoise had an oil with dried / burnt chunks of herbs that completely overthrew the entire dish and left a bad taste that even the matching wine couldn't help I must add that the matching wines were really good, and paired well with each dish. Would we go back? Absolutely! Would we do the tasting menu again? No - for $140.00pp and only two or three good dishes, that unfortunately still left us not quite full by the end, we would probably do the 3 Course A La Carte instead. In addition to being cheaper $95.00pp, the portions were larger and we could pick things that we would better enjoy.
Very impressive experience of fine dining and escape from busy/noisy locations. The restaurant decor is charming and classy. Foods are beautiful and tasty. However, the dinner is a bit slow serving, we a bit sleepy while waiting!: Kids menu need to be changed to more fun and attractive for “real kids”.
What an evening... We decided that to get the most out of the evening that we would opt in for The Long Apron's tasting menu with wine pairing. Sure it might be a bit expensive, but for good reason. The food and wine pairing was something out of a gourmet travelling experience. With multiple wines from Australia as well as abroad paired with each dish, for you to really soak in the flavour of the dish, as well as see what an incredible change the wine can go through, depending on what you are eating. The staff was amazing. Friendly from start to finish, and very knowledgeable about each dish as well as how and why the wine was picked for those dishes. What we do love about theses experiences is that the staff give their honest opinions about what they like the best and why, making for great conversation as the night goes on. Celebrating a 10 year anniversary was made just as special by the restaurant as they greeted us with an absolutely fantastic champagne to start the evening, and a little treat at the end just to say congratulations. Too kind of them. Definitely recommend the wine pairing with the tasting menu.
I’ll start by saying that the quality of the food was 5-stars, if a little expensive, but that’s to be expected for the location and beautiful setting. The chef kindly catered to my partner being a vegetarian and allowed us each to do different versions of the tasting menu. Regarding the service, one expects professionalism from a fine dining setting, but that service should never be robotic like it was for us. Our waitress hardly said a word to us all night but for the soft announcement of the dishes that came out. We were never offered another drink despite empty glasses and had to call over other staff to order. We were also declined being able to order a simple classic cocktail from the restaurant manager only to have a far more bubbly and enjoyable waitress make one in a matter of minutes. It seemed to me the venue tries a little to hard and perhaps this type of service appeals to some, but we certainly would have appreciated a little more conversation, personalised service, and some information about the food beyond a softly spoken generic list of the obvious ingredients on the plate. Again, the food and wine was amazing and I’d happily suggest people experience it, but also hope the restaurant takes these comments into consideration.
While staying a couple of nights at Spicers Clovelly Estate we dined at the Long Apron on a couple of occasions. We want to thank Cindy for making our dining experience very special for us and catering to our needs, fussy buggers : Over the two nights, we sampled quite a few dishes on the menu and found the food to be of the highest standard, matched by the service of Cindy. Highly recommend dining here if in the area.
Food delicious and creative, service was average, lady serving us didn’t seem to love her job and was quite stand offish, music was not aligned to an expensive restaurant. Could not fault the food though
Everyone is making beef cheek these days and they do have the best i ever had. Rice pudding ice Cream was interesting and surprisingly inspiring. The service was excellent, the place is located in a nice and spacious setting, relaxing classic French decor. By in large, that was an awesome experienced.
Great tasting food. Outdoors a little too dark at night. Was a long time between entree and main / 3rd and 4th degustation dishes.Food: 5/5
Had the pleasure of enjoying chef Andy's degustation menu. It was an exceptional sequence of dishes. Everything was cooked to perfection. Worthy of the 4 hour back and forth drive for dinner.
