Pretty good mussels and oysters were very fresh. Service was good as well, seating outside provided good views of the water. Only let down was that we called ahead and asked if they had tables that would allow dogs and we were told they did. Once we got there they told us dogs weren't allowed at the tables. We managed to tie the dogs out the front while we ate so it wasn't all bad.
Oysters were beautiful and fresh! Very generous servings of mussels Gorgeous beachside view However there were a frightening number of flies right near our table which disturbed the ambience, and the Caesar salad was mid.Recommended dishesOysters on the Half Shell, Bowl of Mussels
First time eating at "The Little Mussel Cafe", and we came especially to visit on a chilly midwinter Sunday, after a day trip to the area. Set in what looks like an old weatherboard cottage, the inside is warm wood and inviting. There is an outside deck with great views, but it was way to chilly and windy for us, so we stayed inside. There is a large bar on one side and the whole place has a warm homey feel. Obviously with a name like "Little Mussle", they specialise in that seafood which is locally grown. There is a great range of dishes featuring the local produce and a daily specials menu as well. We ordered a few tasting platters, a sashimi dish and a steak. The presentation was colourful and mouthwatering, tempting the eyes and the tastebuds. Everything was delicious, the only thing we thought was lacking was some carbohydrates. The one slice of bread for the juices seemed a bit stingy. Everything on the platters was delicious and obviously as fresh as possible. The local mussels were the largest we've ever seen and absolutely delicious. My steak unfortunately was dreadful. Even though ordered as medium, it was medium rare, but so chewy and full of gristle, even with the supplied steak knife, I could barely hack my way through it. Very disappointed in that. The roast vegies with it were excellent though and were obviously the highlight of the dish. I've still rated it as 5 stars overall, as the seafood IS exceptional, the staff were fantastic and the friendly, family vibe was enjoyable. We'll be back next time we're in the area, with fingers crossed that my steak was an anomaly!
Mussles were fresh but food are pricey, especially with 20% surcharge for public holiday. Seafood tower is small for $85. The place is very busy, so either come early or make bookings.
The Mussels are fresh and we enjoyed the french mussel sauce. We were not a fan of the lemon mussels. Mussel arancini balls were average. Downfall was that the Mussels were not cleaned properly as most had the beards in the Mussels. Service was a bit slow but understandable as there were new staff that were being trained.
Changed my 3 star review to 1 star for the following reason: After giving an honest review the owner left a very sarcastic comment. Terrible way to treat overpaying customers! The food wasn't great, lousy service, I was being generous with a 3 star review! I 'complained' about the small portion and owner comes back: ' If you find 1kg mussles a small portion...'. - well, it might’ve been 1kg with the plate and the many empty shells in the dish! And the chicken breast was big indeed, it was supposed to be a schnitzel! Google how to make a schnitzel maybe? It was just a big piece of superdry! Chicken breast with some breadcrumbs. Food is definitely not good, but your attitude towards customers is the worst. Won't return here for sure!
We booked a table after coming off the Ferry from Melbourne to visit the Portarlington Mussels Festival. Just a short walk uphill to the corner restaurant our table was waiting for us. Great place to catch up and have a fantastic meal. The Mussels chowder, Mussels in Chilli and Barramundi Fish and Chips were excellent. The King Fish Sushi with Chilli was divine. It was better than buying it in the Festival. For our large party of 16 we were treated to a gastronomic feast. Thank you Little Mussel.
Overall an amazing place to dine in on our trip to Portalington. Not only was the food fresh and amazing but the view was magnificent from the restaurant. Highly recommend and would go back
Went there for lunch and had the arancini balls and lemon and thyme mussels. The arancini balls were ok. Mussels were fresh but the lemon and thyme soup/broth was so so. Couldn't really drink it as it felt more like the water they were cooked in and lemon added to them. Portion size is generous though. My biggest gripe is the mussels were not completely cleaned and still had beards. Was a bit hard to get the staff's attention but they were friendly ish.
Excellent experience. Super fresh mussels, direct from owner's farm. Highly recommended. Definitely worth the ferry trip across the bay from Melbourne.
