The Ipswich Club

Story

Ipswich Club House is a heritage-listed villa at 14 Gray Street, Ipswich, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by George Brockwell Gill and built from to 1916. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 August 1992.HistoryThe grand two-storey timber building which is owned and used by The Ipswich Club was built for Ipswich butcher and pastoralist, J.P. Bottomley in 1916. Bottomley commissioned prominent Ipswich architect, George Brockwell Gill, to design the house as a family home. In 1898 Bottomley purchased allotment 16 from the Cramb estate and the adjacent allotment, 15, was purchased in June 1914. The Ipswich City Council water rates book for 1915-16 notes a new house on site from 1 March 1916.Bottomley was the youngest of 14 children and was born in Bradford, Yorkshire. He came to Australia, arriving in Ipswich in 1884. Initially he worked with Watson Brothers, Butchers, but later he had his own butcher's business and bought pastoral land in the Burnett and western districts. The business he worked for was probably that of Richard Watson and his two brothers. Watson owned the grand residence, "Elamang", at East Ipswich. Bottomley became a high profile Ipswich figure, serving for nine years on the Purga Shire Council, including four years as chairman, and also serving the Ipswich City Council for two years. He was also president of community organisations including the Ipswich Show Society, Ipswich Chamber of Commerce, Queensland Pastoral and Agricultural Society and the Ipswich Bowling Club.

Fenton has popped back up from his hiatus of the cooking world and is now preparing tapas at the ipswich club. Fenton has always made amazing food and I will be returning here for some fantastic meals.

I chose the Ipswich Club to host a business get-together, in the form of a breakfast. The club was recommended by another business similar to ours, as a lovely place with lovely food and a fantastic setting. We were very happy with the location and the array of food and snacks that were made to our specifications. The club itself is such a beautiful and comfortable setting. Management and staff had created beautiful table settings especially for us, which suited our event to a tea. They were only too happy to fulfil all of our requirements. We've already booked into the Ipswich Club for our next event :)

Had our wedding here 2 years ago and it was Fantastic, Sue the Coordinator was so lovely and made sure the whole event start to finish ran smoothly, along with Figjam catering the night was everything we had hoped for. 2 years on and we re booked for my sisters wedding. It is with great regret I have to report that the new catering although head chef and coordinator are lovely, food is not as great and jobs and promises left open and not complete. My main issue being the Bar staff which I am not sure are from Feast and Co Catering but as long as they are your staff for the event night, you will be very disappointed. We hired this venue until 12pm this was to be the WHOLE venue. Areas were locked off so no room for elderly guests to sit and enjoy a cuppa, the tea and coffee stations were not set up and it was an unfriendly grunt when asked about this. Bar staff got orders wrong and when asked abused guest and told them they were the ones being rude. Informed by one bar person we could keep ordering drinks and pay by cash, the other informed us this was not allowed causing frustration and bar staff were then telling guests they must leave and continued to swear in front of other guest and abuse wedding guest. To top this off the alternate drop for dinner guests were rudly told they had to wait until all plates had been dropped before they could begin to swap. I was also very disappointed by the way the wedding cake was cut, all different shapes and sizes, I have no idea what logical cake cutting they were going for, you could also tell it had been cut early in the day and left open as it had dried out and this was defiantly not delivered that way. This was a terrible experience and we would never recommend anyone to book here. We now have a tainted memory of our sisters wedding all because the Hospitality from bar staff was disgusting not only towards young guests but all guest of the wedding. We hope they can use this constructively and work on their skills as there seemed to be disharmony and disorganisation/ miscommunication in the Ipswich Club Team. Too many chiefs not enough Indians?
