About

A co-educational Anglican grammar school located on the south coast of NSW, Australia.

Story

The Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS) was founded in 1959 through the concerted efforts, vision and energy of the late Bishop Gordon Begbie and a dedicated band of 'founding parents' who firmly believed in the need for a regional Anglican school to be based in the Illawarra.

The vision and philosophy of those families to fully develop young people spiritually, intellectually, socially and physically in order that they might enter society with strong Christian Foundations to lead and serve are still followed today. The School has come a long way in its short history thanks to the leadership of successive administrations and the dedicated support of its many families.

On its opening day on 3 February 1959, the first Headmaster, Rev R F Bosanquet and two staff, welcomed 28 boys into a close and caring community. In 1975, the School became co-educational when it amalgamated with SCEGGS `Gleniffer Brae'.

TIGS now has an enrolment of over 1000 students, Preparatory to Year 12, housed in a modern educational setting with a well-established and acknowledged reputation for delivering programs of excellence.

I was invited by Scott MacBain from The Illawarra Grammar School TIGS to provide a LinkedIn Workshop for Year 12 students in the afternoon and another one for Alumni and Local Businesses in the evening on 14/9/18. Everyone that I met that day, from the person at the front desk through to students, staff in the library and alumni was polite, professional and friendly and went out of their way to provide an exceptional experience. Very impressed. Sue Ellson :
If your child is creative or has any mental health issues, don’t sent them here! This is coming from an ex TIGS parent and I know I am not the only one who feels this way from parents and students alike. They will not only cause mental health issues but not bother to properly help you with them once you have them. Instead, my child in her final year was told to “just go” for the final few months, instead of get support. A complete waste of money that caused more harm than good. You will be doing your child a great disservice by sending them here both educationally and mentally. NOTE: Every single time I try to write my honest review, TIGS admin take it down. This is just further proof of their lack of care for their students and the harmful environment they foster.
I have things to say but I don't want to be in trouble, the school is a good business, but is not a nurturing environment. They have blocked reviews so even if I wanted to on my school account then I would not be able to, they have also done this with websites like the chrome web store. It has become a strangling environment where we can't do anything with our emails, which for some people are the only ones they are allowed. It has stopped us from accessing these things which can just make your experience just a bit more enjoyable showing that they care more about the education than the mental health.
I went to this school and it was awful. I was constantly bullied for being a proud vegan, and even had chunks of raw meat thrown at me by the teachers. Very bad school.
I had the worst experience going to this school. I hated every minute. Full of racists. DID NOT ALLOW ME TO CELEBRATE MY CULTURAL DIFFERENCE. DONT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE IF YOU ARE NOT CHRISTIAN , All show and no substance. DISGUSTED.
gonna bring down the house a little, idk about some of ya'll and some of ya'lls opinions on the staff here but they got the finest darn tootin rootin passionate people ever, its like if the mafia was cool and cared about students education. yeehaw
My Daughter has been a student at The Illawarra Grammar School for just over a year now. I have seen her blossom into a wonderful, deeply respectful individual. The Teaching Staff, of whom I have met many, are deeply dedicated to the students, their education and to their growth as citizens of their community.
great school highly recommend going. The teachers are professional yet friendly and the campus is amazing.
i love this school i made 14 friends in one day please go and see the magic. my 5 siblings go there. In my old school I went to a disrespectful place but this school is better.
Disastrous teaching staff. Obnoxious students. Narcissistic headmaster. All around umm uh hahaha sorry all around disrespectful and my least favourite place on Earth.
