Milton wasn’t the place I expected to have a faultless Italian dinner, but that is exactly what The guild. delivered. Five years after my last visit, with a new chef at the helm, this restaurant has really found its groove. From the compact menu, wood-fired rock oysters $28/6 arrive warmed not cooked tasting of both land and sea with a black truffle balsamic and Italian pancetta combo that improves upon Kirkpatrick. Bubbling lime foam adorned with a squid ink coral crisp hides a barely cooked scallop $5/each in a parsley and soy reduction. The combo. allows you to really taste the translucent bivalve gently warmed through by the wood-fire grill. The friendly floor team upsold us a bread basket $8 that turned out to be the best decision ever. Organic flour made the three-stroead selection sing against country butter. It was also perfect for mopping up seafood the whacky kohlrabi ravioli $23. Using creamy raw prawns, passionfruit, lime and ginger laid over discs of kohlrabi with the bisque poured upon serving, this dish was both unique and intriguing. Pizza—in our case the white-based ciccio bello $26 with pancetta, salami, chilli, basil, black truffle and pockets of creamy mascarpone—here remains well-executed. However I was more besotted with the artful tangle of spaghetti “allo scoglio” $34 where minced seafood and king prawn hunks joined freshly made egg spaghetti in a simple syrupy sauce that allowed the other ingredients to speak. Teamed with a well-priced selection from the wine list—the 2017 Jones Road Chardonnay $59 from the Mornington Peninsula—this was a meal beyond the calibre I expected to find in Milton. Bravo!
We were taken here for dinner by family. Our first visit here. Really busy but excellent service. Food and choices was brilliant. Wine choices also great. Staff were young and enthusiastic but also professional. Watching the staff bringing dinners through the door as the kitchen is next door was a novelty but all done perfectly. Full compliments to the staff on this busy Saturday night.
The best pizza I have ever had. Everything is cooked with love and affection. The owners passion for quality, affordability and hospitality is second to none. Lovely venison, ravioli and tiramasu. Don't miss out on this little treasure of a place, if you are travelling down the coast.
This wine bar and restaurant in Milton is great spot serving seasonal and authentic Italian food. We visited on a Wednesday evening and the restaurant was fully booked, so we are glad we had booked ahead. Despite the full restaurant, service was efficient and meals came in a timeline manner. The restaurant set up has a couple of bar tables out front, outdoor dining in the courtyard and indoors. The kitchen is in a separate space across the courtyard but the open kitchen style meant you could see the chefs in action busily working away and the huge woodfired oven for their pizzas. Head chef Filippo Cozzani has curated a menu boasting interesting Northern Italian dishes that were rustic in their flavours and creation, yet modern and fine dining like in their presentation. They use Italian imported products and wines to provide an authentic Experience. Beginning with some outstanding wood fired scallops; with a soy and parsley emulsion, lime foam and a black squid ink coral. The flavour combinations worked beautifully and the scallops were cooked to perfection. The “Riso, patate e Cozze” was a potato rice dish that is a starchy / congee like consistency, flavoured with a good amount of lemon and zest with plump mussels sitting in the mix, presented with the squid ink corals and drizzled with a parsley chlorophyll dressing. It was an interesting dish that we haven’t seen before but it was definitely enjoyable. The eggplant dish was a charred eggplant filled with roasted vegetables; such as potato, onion sitting on a red capsicum mayonnaise. The charring of the eggplant gave the dish a good smokiness too it and the medley of vegetables were nice and softly roasted. It would be good to have this come with a slice of bread to mop up the extra sauce. We also had the “vegan maccheroni”, the pasta tossed in a zucchini and pesto sauce. A good vegan dish and for those not vegan, it comes with goats cheese, which probably steps this dish up another level. There’s so many different dishes we would have happily ordered as well as a long list of woodfired pizzas. This does give us the incentive to return in the future. They use certified organic flour and can also make pastas gluten free if needed. On our visit we didn’t have the space for desserts; but if you so, there’s your traditional Italian options like tiramisu, pannacotta or Nutella calzones. Drink wise, it is a bar so there’s an extensive wine list with plenty of Italian varieties and we like that the menu lists the best pairing for each food option. Plenty of beers and cocktails too that complements the dining experience.
Great authentic Italian food. What a little gem, totally exceeded our expectations. The octopus tentacle starter was out of this world. One of the best pizzas that I have had anywhere. Definately highly recommend this place.Food: 5/5
My wife and I had dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary . Amazing food and fabulous service. The best part is that the owner of restaurant will come to your table to greet you and have smalltalk. Very good vibe we had from that place. High recommended to visit the place.
Great experience, we really appreciated the fact that the owner came out and spoke to us as soon as we walked in as well as a bit later on, we ordered a couple of pizzas and it came out really quickly and was absolutely delicious no faults what so ever, im hugely picky on my pizza dough and the thickness and this was just perfect base and topping ratio, just a really nice experience and ended up here by accident !! will definitely be returning here and recommending to friends and family... Thank you so much Stef and staff
Pretentious? Mwah? I recently dined at The Guild. What an experience! 1st the waiter pretty sure he was the owner attends our table and starts berating us because he wanted his little A4 menus folded not into 3rds but one 3rd folded over a second 3rd with the last 3rd not folded over the other two 3rds. It’s difficult to describe it’s so absurd. At first I thought he was attempting to be comedic until he told us to look at the back of the menu and read the very fine print along the fold line that said “do not fold”……obviously the first thing patrons look for on a menu! When he left the 4 of us agreed that it was a bizarre interaction. Anyway, we decided to order a couple of family size pizzas and a salad to share. The same waiter took our order but he wasn’t happy. He told us that there were other people who had tried to book a table for the night but they couldn’t get in because they were so busy. Therefore, we shouldn’t be so STINGY and should order more food as they normally require everyone at a table to order a meal each at this time of year! One wonders why they sell family size pizza! We'd have walked out if we weren't booked in to see the Backsliders at the Milton Theatre and desperately hungry. This restaurant certainly left a bad taste in my mouth, I don’t recommend it if you expect to be treated with courtesy and respect. To the waiter/restauranteur, I note that you always seem to respond to negative reviews by belittling the reviewer and having a '"deny all claims" mentality. I recommend that you restrain yourself this time pal, refrain from arrogance and just apologise for your poor people skills and rudeness. One tenth of a star for service. I won't go back!
So for a late notice place, heading there for dinner. To note on new years eve night. The service was exceptional, everyone is so incredibly nice and friendly, and so willing to care about how your meal is and your experience is, which shows such a tremendous love for the business and food in which they give to you. The food, we had 2 pizzas, both aboustley beautiful, the dough was amazing, and in noting was floppy and so flavoursome. The good came out is such a fast fashion, but where the taste was not compromised and the food was still so utterly perfect. I would recommend all visitors or anyone around the area who hasn't visited to visit. And take your time in ordering to ensure you get the best meal, because they honeslty take so much time and care in all aspects, you wouldn't be wasting your time or money in going here. To note if a goodlooking bloke comes up and talks to you, his names Stef
Excellent service and delicious food. I was very thrilled with the great craft beer menu which is a rarity but much appreciated. Also the wine list was superb.
