The Avoca Hotel

About

We are a lovely country pub in the Victorian Pyrenees serving great local wines and gourmet food in a beautifully renovated environment.

Story

Built in 1870 this grand old Victorian goldfields pub has been lovingly renovated in 2010 so that there is now a delicious mix of history and modern chic. The food is extraordinary and is perfectly complemented by a list of exclusively local wines. Truly a place to visit, relax and immerse oneself in a warm and welcoming environment.

Enjoyed the lunch. We bought chicken parmi and kids nugget & chip. The food was amazing. I also tried cocktail, Gin no name. The cocktail was great as well. Totally worth a drive for this wonderful food, drinks and friendliness of owners.
First stop on Saturday for our 30th birthday pub crawl. Ian it was a pleasure meeting you and trying out some great gins. I was blown away by the amount of spirits you had and the knowledge you had on each of them. Have heard great things on your food so will be back soon to try it out. Cheers!
Amazing staff who are happy to accommodate for any dietary requirements. Great food the curry is quite warm, not for beginners to the heat and the desserts are definitely worth getting. Reasonable prices for the pub size portions large food portions.
Close to $180 for 3 mains and a bottle of wine! Service was bad, servers are far too young and had no idea what they were doing! One main was $49 for a handful of frozen french fries, deep fried with a steak that wasn't that good and a few lettuce leaves with baby spinach leaves passed off as a salad? A few lettuce and baby spinach leaves is not a salad, it's lettuce leaves and baby spinach leaves! You would expect that if you order something on a menu that says it comes with a salad that it might actually be a salad with cucumber and onion and cherry tomatoes etc and maybe some pine nuts! I've been in the past and it was much better but not impressed this visit!
Definitely one of the best country pubs around, great selection of local drinks, amazing collection of gin, food is of a very good standard and service to match Highly recommend a visit if in the area.
On a cold winter’s night what could be better than a delicious hot meal and an open fire? Perhaps a nice glass of something? You’ll find this at the Avoca Hotel. You’ll also be greeted by very friendly staff. Although this is my third visit to Avoca, it’s my first to the hotel but certainly not my last. Great menu choices and an excellent selection of local wines. There was a also an extensive selection of beers and ales.
My mother and I drove all the way from Clyde Victoria to enjoy a late 50th Birthday lunch with my brother, We arrived on time for our 12pm booking at the Avoca Hotel, the doors opened slightly late a few minutes past 12 to let the wait staff in, we followed through the door next in line after them, the owner never greeted us on arrival, being my first time there I asked him if the first room on the left was the Bistro area to which he abruptly replied “it’s the Bar“ we don’t have a Bistro! “we have a dining room” I thought this a rather rude comment to make to one of his customers and not the warm welcome you’d expect especially from a country Hotel, we were left to find the dining room by ourselves as he never told us where it was located, he just continued on with what he was doing. My mum had a seniors fish and chips, she said her fish and chips with salad on the side was very nice she actually got a proper salad with radish, cucumber, lettuce and onion on the side. My brother and I both ordered the porterhouse steak at $49 each; I asked for mine to be cooked medium rare and it was medium to well done, flame grilled with a nice flavour but not cooked to order, the chips were good but just a handful and the menu said it came with salad on the side ‍ what we got was a merger serve of mixed lettuce like you get from the supermarket, very lack lustre and no dressing to speak of, extremely disappointing indeed, i’d expect better for the price I feel if the menu states salad it should come with a salad not lettuce on the side, Menu stated the meal comes with chips and salad, if it’s just lettuce the menu should say so. The menu said served with chips and salad and it was chips and lettuce. I called the young female waitress over who was very pleasant both girls serving were very pleasant I advised the waitress I was disappointed especially with the meal being served with just lettuce and Not being a salad as stated on the menu, she said she’d let the kitchen know, i’m not sure she bothered to mention it to the cook, as no one came out to our table to see us. My brother asked for his steak to be cooked rare and running off his plate and I asked for mine to be medium rare, I would not even say his was medium cooked, closer to medium to well mine was more well cooked, both of us were disappointed in the meal but my brother chose not to say anything. we shared a bottle of over priced wine $45 loaded at least $20 on top and was no cheaper than buying it by the glass. I wouldn’t bother returning again city prices and merger portions. Total spent $176. my mothers meal was a seniors meal at around $21 which was reasonable. I have read many good reviews on the Hotels website here with some bad ones too, however I have noticed the owner tends to criticise, blame and attempt to justify bad reviews by stating “other customers say they love our food,” rather than apologise or ask what he can do to fix a bad dining experience? I feel this is a very poor business practice. why not just admit that sometimes you get it wrong all his attitude achieves is more ill feelings from your unsatisfied customers. There is a lot more work to be done to make this a better business or a place I would return to. The one star was for my mothers meal.
Lovely helpful staff. Great menu with delicious food in both the pub or restaurant. Great relaxed eveningFood: 5/5
Truely terrific hotel with friendly hard working owners and staff who are passionate about food, wine and beer. The tap beers are thoughtful and enable you to sample some amazing craft brews from around the world. The lunch food was fresh and delicious with a great range of choice. Dishes are suitable for sharing.
Friendly accommodating service. Meals that are tasty, well presented and definitely great quality. The atmosphere is cosy and relaxed. Just right!
