"That Kiwi Place" is a modern Maori and New Zealand inspired food and retail dine-in or takeaway cafe located in Woodville Gardens, Adelaide.
That Kiwi Place is Adelaide’s first New Zealand and Modern Māori inspired “Whare Kai” (House of Kai)!
Opened in August of 2014, the inspiration stems from the owner’s Whanau (family) connections back to Te Tairawhiti or the ‘East Coast’ of Aotearoa New Zealand and the amazing food that had been loved and craved for since the family moved to Australia!
The menu is drawn from the ‘traditional’ Polynesian Māori food like ‘Hangi’ – a replication of the traditional way in which Māori steam food like meats and vegetables in the ground for hours and hours until the meat just falls off the bone. Steamed puddings - a secret golden syrup pudding recipe steamed gently for several hours, before becoming golden perfection. Raw fish – white fish marinated for hours in lemon juice, finished with capsicum, tomato, spring onion and coconut cream and fry bread - golden yeasty bread dough fried to hot savoury amazingness!
Not to leave anyone out, the menu is also comprised of all the amazing humble foods, you can find in nearly every fish and chip shop throughout New Zealand… like garlic butter, ‘all sauces’ and kumara chips, lasagne toppers, battered New Zealand hotdogs, battered oysters and mussels, steak and mushroom burgers… the list goes on.
That Kiwi Place also had a selection of you kiwi favourite, sauces, chips, snack and confectionary as well as gifts such as crèmes, perfumes, clothing, art, jewellery and Māori bone and Pounamu (Greenstone) carvings!
Most importantly, That Kiwi Place offers a humble, comfortable dining area, with affordable kai (food) and friendly service, priding themselves on being able to offer a “Piece of Home” to all the homesick kiwis out there!
