It’s a bridge… spans the Derwent River from West to East and back again. The lane set up is unusual in that there are five lanes generally 3 for east bound traffic and two for those heading west. To accommodate the traffic flow of workers living on the eastern shore, as they travel into the city, the middle lane is changed to west bound just for the morning rush. The foot paths on each side a barely wide enough to ride a bike and have little to protect pedestrians and riders from the very strong winds and heavy rain that happens from time to time… it’s a bridge…
Five lane bridge with middle lane changed direction for morning and afternoon peaks. Bridge is closed to traffic when boats pass under because of lingering fears of a repeat of 1975 bridge collapse when bulk carrier crashed into pylons.
Such a beautiful and expansive bridge. Lights up really well and is a delight to photograph at night!
It's a bridge with a bit of cultural significance. Most Hobart museums and tours will tell the tale of how a ship crashed into the bridge causing damage and how it was repaired. I liked how the 5 lanes can have their traffic direction flow changed to suit traffic needs. There is also a permanent speed camera fitted on the bridge.
awesome bridge with old railway line at one side of it which is no more working walked from University of Tasmania to Rosny Park. All without public/private transport. We used the Tasman bridge to cross by walking and then realized the beauty of ocean and Hobart itself
What a stunning bridge that really stands out while you are in Hobart! The bridge itself is quite well maintained and user friendly while driving on, with good signage. We walked across it from Rosny to get into Hobart and that was a good experience, very noisy and windy though! “Jonique Life” Follow our journey around Australia on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok and YouTube as we highlight wonderful experiences and magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.
Wonderful views of the Derwent and Hobart make this walk worthwhile. Just be aware that the pathways on either side are narrow, and share bike and pedestrian traffic. It is often very windy, and if you have problems with heights this may not be ideal for you!
Nice looking bridge! Some history and a good view.
Classic old bridge with a lot of history. Worth looking up about the collapse in 1975 . not much to look at in the day although you do have the magnificent Mt kunanyi/mt wellington in the background . But at night its beautiful with the lights reflecting of the river Derwent . A must see at night very romantic .
Nice bridge at night, you can walk, run and ride on the bridge. Better wear a light jacket, it’s windy!
