Sydney Seafood School

About

Australia's leading cooking school, established in 1989 at Sydney Fish Market.

Story

With 13,000 guests a year attending classes, Sydney Seafood School is Australia’s leading cooking school.

All classes commence in the School’s tiered auditorium with a demonstration of the dish or dishes to be prepared. After watching the demonstration, guests roll up their sleeves and, in groups of 4-6, with guidance from the presenter and assistants, recreate the dishes before sitting down to enjoy their seafood meal with a glass of wine.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2009, the School underwent a major refurbishment by leading designer Michael McCann of dreamtime australia design, making it Australia’s most beautiful cooking school with a stunning sandstone entry wall by award-winning sculptor Michael Purdy, Icelandic fish leather lining the auditorium, and wild ‘blackboard graffiti’ on the hands-on kitchen walls. Rich oak wood panelling, an aubergine-hued marble demonstration bench, sleek stainless steel and lots of glass complete the look.

Guests cook at custom-made, stainless steel cooking islands fitted with state-of-the-art Fisher & Paykel appliances, Hettich soft close drawers, hinges and runners ensure all cabinetry opens and closes smoothly and silently and 46" High Definition LCD Sharp television screens above the demonstration bench ensure a perfect view of all the cooking action.

Once the cooking's over, guests adjourn to the dining room which features a 360-degree photomural of Blackwattle Bay and fishnet chandeliers with over 6,000 gently glowing globes. It's casual but comfortable with cloth serviettes, Villeroy & Boch china and Spiegelau glassware, plus coffee from the School's Nespresso coffee machines.

Fabulous experience at Seafood Cooking School - Danielle Alvarez was so generous with her time and shared some super helpful cooking secrets whilst the Seafood School team were amazing. Ice cold drinks and canapes to start, followed by the cooking demonstration and then into the kitchen to make and cook your meal before sitting down to eat and enjoy the company of new friends was just fantastic. I did this over twenty years ago with our team of florists as a team building exercise which was great. Doing the class with my daughter was even better. Really well run and a professional experience from start to finish. And getting to cooking and eat a top class restaurant meal with no washing up totally completes the experience. 5 stars easy!
Sydney seafood school invited me to a Sea Urchin cooking class on the weekend. What an amazing experience. We were warmly greeted with a glass of champagne and sea urchin canapes then we had a classroom session where Alex from the Sydney Fish Market taught us about the invasive species of purple spine sea urchin along the NSW coastline. We then had a demonstration of how to make sea urchin egg custards, sea urchin butter and fettuccine carbonara with urchins. I joined with 4 other friends at a cooking bench and made those dishes. We had a great time and enjoyed a nice meal together. Staff were very helpful and ready to help us with any questions. inspired to cook these at home. A great bonding experience for all and we got to keep our aprons and recipes. Fantastic. I'm going to check out their many other courses too
The kids sushi making class was outstanding. From the second the kids were greeted by the staff, as a parent, I knew the kids were looked after. The inclusivity and hands on experience the kids received, was a credit to the staff who cared, and knew to work with children. My kids had never done anything like this in the past and they were beaming with excitement afterwards. The produce and facilities were excellent. Well done! We will be back!
I took part in the chilli crab cooking class in this school last night with a friend. The experience far far exceeded my expectation. The quality of the teaching, facilities, and cooking ingredients were all of the highest standard. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of preparing the dishes in a team and the dining experience afterwards. It was a fun night. I want to thank the organisers and staff for their generosity. It was a cooking class done with a heart.
Our second time to the Seafood School this time cooking Middle Eastern fare. From the demonstration, to the hands on cooking session to the dining experience, it was fun and a great way to meet new people and have a great healthy meal at the same time. Fiona and Jen were lovely hosts who were attentive and knowledgable. We walked away at the end of the night feeling satiated and keen to try the recipes at home.
I bought a voucher for a cooking class for my husband and it was awesome. The instructors were informative and fun and then we got to enjoy the dishes we cooked for lunch. Definitely recommend!!
Such a great experience! We got so many seafood cooking tips as well as general cooking tips. Highly recommended, really fun and friendly environment to enjoy with friends and family.
The Quick n' Delicious class was simply fantastic. Jen, the demonstrator was clear, unrushed and a very personable human being. The recipes were easy to follow and showcased a great array of different types and techniques. I'm quite confident they would be recipes I'd make at home unlike some of the more unusual dishes I did at a previous class. There was plenty of time for the hands-on cooking and eating; 3 dishes in 30 minutes, so the whole class only took about 2 hours 15 minutes of the allocated 3 hours. This was a nice relaxing way to spend the session rather than feeling like you were on a reality TV cooking show. As always, the instruction on how to select good quality produce seafood and other was very useful. Serving sizes were ultra-generous and I can eat a lot!
I was surprised at the focus on alcohol. During the lecture at the beginning speaking to food prep and cooking two jokes about alcohol, children in the class drinking alcohol as soon as they turn 18 which is really weird for me when adults encourage children to start drinking as soon as they turn 18 and the whole exercise experience being benefited my grog. Lastly when you sat down white and red wine where placed on out table without asking three times by different staff. I was in a group of young couple in 20s with older couple.
Just to add... had a great response from Roberta manager from the school. Well done Roberta for interacting and giving great customer service. Will definitely take you up on your offer To add: we visited the second time around on the 2/11/2019 and had a wonderful experience. Many thanks you were awesome
