As an international student, pursuing a master's degree in construction and infrastructure management. In my experience with this university, they're in the top positions in teaching the civil and engineering field in Melbourne. I'm becoming more confident in my field thanks to their on campus practices, lectures, labs and tutorial activities.
Swinburne University: Excellent research, innovation, and industry ties. Modern campus, diverse student body. High living costs and occasional admin delays. Great for education and careers.
It's good to upgrade your skills. As an international student I feel uni is doing great support and assistance for all students.Lot of clubs events make life at Swinburne memorable
I would reconsider studying for a Business related degree here. I found the course outdated when I studied here. The course I studied was a career change for a mature aged student like myself. When I attended the open day, I asked the lecturer about whether they would teach us computer applications which was to be used in the workplace and I was told that they would, but they did not. As a result, I have been struggling to find a job in the business field. However, there was a White student in my class who was born in Australia, and the person found the job, so seems like bias also occurs as I am Brown skinned. I am an Australian Citizen though. I heard it is about contacts you have and since I do not have any contacts for jobs, then it has been a struggle. I would also advise not studying for the Postgrad Accounting/Finance course as most students are International from India, China, Vietnam, etc and they seem to get the jobs due to the contacts they have here. I basically gave up looking for the Business related job as I did not even secure an interview, a waste of my HECS. I am truly disappointed. The other thing is that although I liked the location of the UNI, I found the local people unfriendly even when I tried making friends being Brown skinned. I did find some racism here but overall it was good, however the racism I mostly encountered was externally such as in the workplace where I was the only Brown skinned Woman amongst a group of foreign European White Women and where I was the target for bullying and racism which resulted in me leaving and was a result of having a disagreement with the White Australian Female Manager and because I was not from the same religion most people are atheist here by the way. Many workplaces seem toxic here anyway. The thing is that my country of origin has diversity in the workplace and includes all races and religions, unfortunately, I did not notice that here in the few jobs I had. In that regard, I would not recommend people with an Indian background I am NOT from India, I am from another Western country from my country to migrate here to work due to the negative experiences I had in some workplaces. I would say, although, I studied at another UNI in Melbourne and this UNI beats the other UNI hands down as I found people here nicer.
I would choose to do a business degree elsewhere. Whereas once units use to be have a good mix of assignments and online exams for those who might not be strong in exams/online tests could set themselves up in assignments. Now the units seem to be heavily exam/online test focused. While I appreciate exams serve a purpose. When you attach 50% of the mark to the final exam. That is a bit excessive when they are marked hard. In my last unit the final exam weighed 50% while the mean of marks was 52. It’s pretty concerning when the majority of people are just scraping a pass. The online courses appear to be slapped together from YouTube videos with material from the odd lecture thrown in. Depending on the unit there may be a lot of calculations to do. The textbook will probably not contain an answers section to know if you are on the right track.
I've been going here for a year and half now, the university has fantastic resources and utilities, I'm doing a double degree in computer science and game design, the course is fun and rewarding. The university itself is really good, there is a train that runs right through the middle of campus, so public transport is really easy. I would definitely recommend coming here, the local area around the school as well provide great opportunities for lunch in the breaks between my classes. Several of the local stores order discounts for having a student id card. I was able to get a burger and chips for $10 from huxtaburger. There are also opportunities for on and off campus jobs, as well as on and off campus accommodations. The teaching staff here clearly want you to succeed, I've had a few specific professors be incredibly helpful and effective. Fantastic university, can't wait to finish my degree.
I studied Science here previously and it was good for the most part, there were some negative instances but overall it was positive mostly with a lot of independent studying. As for the job situation, it is a different story. I found people here seem to get jobs through contacts people from their native country recommend them, etc and maybe some bias and discrimination as I noticed with the case of people form India, Sri Lanka, China and other Asian countries. I am NOT from India although I have an Indian background but Indians from India DO NOT consider Indians from outside India to be India, they told me so. I am an Australian Citizen though and from another Western country. So I guess, it depends what course you study, however I found the locals insular when I studied here as a Brown skinned person, it was odd because people from my native country are very friendly and open to making friends with foreigners but not so here. Oh, I did encounter racism both at the UNI and in the workplace here where in my previous job I was the only Brown skinned person and was bullied and harassed out of the job by White British and Eastern European Women all because I had a disagreement with the White Female Slavic Manager and who refused to give me a reference. To this day I am weary around White Women, I find it hard to trust them and I would say, British people do not deserve the warm and friendly reception from my native country.
It’s my first semester and I’m blown away with how amazing this school is. I was struggling with some concepts in chemistry and had 3 different teachers happy to help me in their own time including the head of the chemistry department. These amazing teachers will do any thing to help. I’ve also found the support in the MASH centre really good. They also have many PH’d students happy to offer their own time to help. You’re not just a number here. There are also teachers that teach at other more prestigious schools and say that Swinburne is the best.
Facilities are good but teaching is not exceptional. Class rooms are superb . Easily accepted by metro, tram, car and bus
I'd give one star but Google only post reviews that are two stars or more. You can't be honest on this app. Only my glowing reviews are published. It's so fake. Anyway: truth time IF this ever gets published - I completed a Certificate IV at Swinburne passed EVERYTHING the FIRST time while caring for my 74 year old Mum on her d*athbed. All my Swinburne teachers had a letter from the doctor confirming this situation. Despite this they seemingly adored publicly humiliating me in classes if I was ever 5 minutes late or 1 day late submitting an assessment. One teacher gloatingly informed the class that she thought I was going to fail. That got a few laughs at my expense. As I said I passed every subject the first time. All this while caring for my Mum with physical disability, mental disability & a body that was breaking down in every possible way. I was drowning in p*o probably not allowed to say that either. When I complained about the teacher's lack of professionalism I was palmed off to student services or told to just chuck my Mum in a home for THEIR convenience. Never attending this TAFE/Uni again. There's another thing I want to say on here but Google won't publish it. Just look up the 'accident' that happened at Swinburne in 2022.
