Stayed in a private room which was fine and clean but as basic as possible. No bedside table so had to put all belongings on the floor. Not nice. Phone was left hanging from the charger from the wall as there was no table to put it on. Wet room style bathrooms on ground floor are good for disabled access, however the combined shower/toilet in one space means having to wait ages to go to the toilet because someone is showering. Also means shower floor ends up dirty as people going to toilet have shoes on. Only 2 between whole floor. No hot water the whole 5 days. Fridges were genuinely the most disgusting fridges I’ve ever seen. We decided to let our food go off rather than put our food in them as they were THICK with dirt & looked like they hadn’t been cleaned since 2006. Location is far from everything but good free shuttle bus service. That’s the only good thing about the whole hostel. Wouldn’t recommend and wouldn’t stay here again. Yes it’s cheaper than everywhere else but there’s a reason for that.
The location was great. Has regular free transport to centre of town. Bar was an excellent place to chill and play pool at in the afternoon and night. All front desk and bar staff are very friendly and welcoming. Food are great and good value too.Service: 5/5
The electrical outlets at the beds are quite good. I wish there was a place in the shower room where you could take off your shoes. I think it would be helpful to have a floor map in the building, as it would be easier to find. There is an extra charge if you think you forgot your key in your room and tell them.
The Summer House Backpacker Hostel is a very nice place to stay in Cairns. A hostel where you can enjoy peace and friendship. The establishment offer you many things to make your stay memorable and easy during your experience in Cairns. The staff are very kind with the guest, the room are clean, and the public area are special for backpackers whom wants to be in a safe and chill hostel. Thank you for my experience in here, cheers!
My favourite hostel in Cairns. The place is just amazing. The staff is super helpful, very clean facilities. Very good happy hour and the food is delicious. Free shuttle bus into town centre, which is great!Rooms: 5/5
I have stayed in many hostels and this one does a very good job considering it’s size. The common areas are cleaned frequently and the staff are always friendly. Cecilia and Daniel from reception have been super helpful with everything I need. Location isn’t the best, but there’s a free shuttle every 30 min from 8am to midnight.Rooms: 5/5
Had an initially wonderful stay here. Great vibe, lovely staff Daniel in particular was so lovely, welcoming and became a great friend! bar prices were reasonable for alcohol and food, rooms were decent, toilet / shower rooms the same. However it got far too busy with upper management clearly not caring about how this was affecting the rest of the hostel people started stealing food, kitchen was always insane, became much louder, others at the hostel became much louder and more out of line. Initially was one of the best hostels I've ever stayed at. However after a horrible incident involving a soiled room, a bunch of my items ruined, and a man who definitely should have been kicked out being able to stay the night upper management ruined this for me. Staff were somewhat understandably unprepared and it was handled horribly and I lost all faith in the place and left as quickly as I could at the end of my stay what with the refund policy also being horrible I couldn’t leave any sooner. Would have been a 5 star if it wasn’t for what happened in my last week there
If you like ants all over your stuff this is the hostel for you!! Rooms come with beds and lockers… no tables or shelves or anything else so all of your stuff goes on the floor. My stuff is now infested with ants. Bathrooms are gross, might just be the people using them but even so they are not cleaned well at all. Same goes for the communal kitchen, might just be the people but it is so poorly cleaned. Extended my stay in a private room 1 bunk bed for 1 night and it cost me $140. You’re better off staying at the Sheridan or Hilton down the street for those prices.
Really nice hostel! I got there late after a long day of traveling and I got a free upgrade to a private room, which was amazing!!! The boy at the reception was really cute and the hostel offers a lot of nice things to socialize, which is great! Which I could have stayed longer - seemed like a good place to be. Close to the airport and with a free City shuttle :-
I stayed as a long term guest in an 8 bed room, you have to pay 2 weeks upfront without refund. What they dont tell you when you want to check out earlier that you can’t even save the room for anytime later on, and you cant give the room to any other person so you literally lose the money you payed for. In the beds you can feel the feathers, the shared bathroom is not the greatest and the rooms are small. The hallway and general first impression is like in an old prison. The kitchen is closed in the night aswell as during the day for couple of hours. The neighbours complain when it is too loud so sometimes they shut the bar early. Pros: It’s a quiet hostel, free shuttle bus to the city, free standard breakfast bread and cereal. Parking spots available in front of the hostel.
